Un Sorn help needed!

Right then my dad owns a 51 Reg Ford Fiesta. Which the DVLA had issued a Disabled tax disc to him previously and changed the paperwork etc after been ill. Then last year when the  tax renewal came round they told him he had to change it back as he was no longer entitled which was all fine. He sent the form off after 1st phoning them to find how he went about retaxing it along with the insurance certificate and a cheque for the tax.

Then a week later he got a letter saying that the insurance certificate had expired and said he would have to reapply again which annoyed my dad as when he phone them originally he told them that the current certificate was due to expire in a week but they said it wouldn't be a problem as they would process it before then!

So my dad rung them and that didn't go well. He was that peed he just left it since last May and the poor Fiesta just sat there. He has kept it insured and got it re mot'd though but otherwise it been stuck on the drive. The main problem is he never Sorned the car. An apart from the 1st Sorn reminder the DVLA have never been in contact either.

I've been on the DVLA site tonight and tried putting in the Sorn Document number in to activate the sorn but it appears to have expired.

What if anything can I do to get a new V5 sorted back to PLG and Sorn / Taxed without been hit with a fine.

I appreciate that my dad should have Sorned it at least in the 1St place and had reminded him about it a few times but being a stubborn sod he hasn't listened.

Yer I think that's going to be the only way just have to hope they don't send a big fine in the post! Will have to sort out a new V5 as well as he could do with selling it really as he was hardly using it when it was taxed and he got 3 vans an are Uno on the driver which keeps his neighbours happy. :-)

My car was recently off the road for 4 months and when I went to retax it the SORN notice had expired, but I was able to retax it from the reference number on the V5C. My case was quite straightforward, same tax class and SORNed from when the last tax expired, but I think that it might be worth trying with the original V5 and then changing the tax class after he's done that.

You can tax it as normal at a post office now, they will send the logbook off for you to change the tax category too. It's dead easy.I wouldn't mention the SORN thing, I don't think I've heard of anyone being fined when taxing an unsorned car anyway.

exemptions (historic, disibled, ambulance ect) are not chased for SORN as theres no back tax to claim. The PO will change the class now when you tax it.

On my Nippa - which has been untaxed since October last year - I can't tax online as it says something about accessing DWP records - I assume this is because it was previously on disability tax? I didn't send the V5 off as the previous owner didn't send it off when he bought it, and it was a 'trade' swap, but have sent it off a couple of weeks ago, but not had anything back yet.

I'm going to try and tax it in the post office today.

Thanks everyone. My dad doesn't want to tax it at the moment as money a bit tight. So I've Sorn it for now but it came up straight away that he had failed to declare or tax it since last May and they may take action.

Hopefully I haven't dropped a clanger. So can I just go to my local Post Office and get the V5 form changed from disabled to PLG even if im not taxing it?

You can't change from an exemption to a payment type Excise Licence without the intervention of Doovla. It looks like you need to involve Swansea. Best of luck.

The UK obvioulsy has the most complicated car registration and tax system in the world. Can only shake my head reading about SORN, millions of forms, horrible fines and all that nonsense.....

I would be so much easier if they scrapped the lot, and put the levy on fuel instead.

the PO have taken over re classifying now. Even so you can only do that when you tax it.

There shouldn't be a problem re-SORNing the car and I doubt they will take any action but of course don't take my word for it. I forgot to re-SORN a car a few years ago and got the same warning when I re-SORN'd it. No action was ever taken.

This might be because SORNing a car is free, you pay nothing, so even had you SORN'd the car when it was due, you'd have paid nothing anyway. It might be a different story had you re-taxed a car that hadn't been taxed/SORN'd for a period previously.

I think you can change the V5 from disabled to PLG without re-taxing a car. I seem to remember CMS206 doing this for me when he got the Sterling.
