2003 focus diesel, no 5th or reverse gears.

I've clocked a nice focus ghia oil burner estate, only problem is that it's lost 5th and reverse gears, I think it won't go in rather than going in and there being a gear there anymore.

Anyway,

Has anybody seen this before? It's it common? Will a tweak of the rods or cables fix it?

Advice will be rewarded with a "like".

Yup, check the cables- some are adjustable. IIRC reverse is below 5th on the knob, so side to side cable is faulty.

TOOLS NEEDED: none

1. If make sure the cables are locked in the bracket. the knurls open by twisting them.

2. looking at the shift linkage, you will see two levers with cables on them. the one to the left is a small lever that controls the left and right. the larger one with the huge counterweight on it controls the up and down.

3. put the shifter in 4th gear and go to the left-right lever. Push the orange button on the cable in and move the lever so that it is pointing straight down and there is no slack in the cable. release the button.

4. have an assistant hold the shifter all the way left. Now go to the cables again and push the orange button on the up-down cable. the counterweight causes this to be a little off center so manually push this linkage to be pointing straight down. when it is set, release the orange button.

If the lever is loose then it is probably cable failure. If the lever moves as it should then the issue is more likely to be in the box.

I had a Granada twink that got stuck leaving me with only 5th and reverse.

Also selector shaft seizes in bush same as Transits. I think movement for 5th and Rev translates to shaft moving up and down (relative to bush). Ford fix is to get remove selector housing and replace parts. Less retail method is informed/brave thump (in neutral)with large hammer then work up and down. Push lip of (selector)shaft seal down with wire to let some lube in

Take it to Prees Heath on a Wednesday night. Put a fair reserve on it, suppress laughter when someone buys it. Use money to but better car.
