I think I done well. Others may disagree.

Today, I called in on another local RS1600i owner, who I have met once before, to see if he had a chance to dig out the air intake pipe that was removed from his own, 70K mile car, when he restored and rally prepped it five years ago.

He had found it and also a properly drilled airbox (what I was planning to do with a spare one).

He didn't want to split these parts from a big box of engine bay parts he now has no use for, so he sold me it as a job lot.

All RS1600i specific parts that are rare or impossible to find and make very handy spares.

A perfect condition intake pipe - these perish. Mine currently has an XR3i one

Airbox

Intake manifold and TB

Low mileage metering head

Fuel pipes and fittings/clips

Injectors

Heat exchanger

Cold start valve

Working ECU

Twin coils, HT leads and bracket

Heater motor

Heater box and matrix

BNIB rev counter

and probably some other stuff I have missed

This helps me out a great deal. It means I can replace the intake pipe and try out the drilled air box before I ruin mine.

Also, my blower has always blown cold, despite the engine coming up to temperature, new thermostat etc.

I also noticed water in the heater box outlets, which has now taken to dripping out into the footwells.

I never put two and two together, but thinking on, I bet I have a rotten matrix.

Good job this new one is in great shape and passes the 'leak' test. :)

I'll not be a dick and ebay this stuff for £5/600 profit. Maybe those figures will persuade the doubters that this was an actual, factual BILLY BARGAIN.

Why didn't you think to grab the head and finned rocker cover?

Cos he's kept a lot of parts for his rally build. Including head and cam cover.

This thing sounds great on twin carbs etc.

If you are happy with what you've got then all is good. Whenever I've been out at flea markets, autojumbles and tat fairs and seen something I'd like then not bought it because maybe it was slightly more than I wanted to pay, I always end up saying to myself "I wish I'd bought that now".

Well, I was going to offer £50 for the intake pipe and airbox, alone. A VGC pipe will sell for about £150 if some knacker with an RSOC fleece decides he wants to store it in his loft as a spare for his other three. So when he said he didn't want to split, it worked out better for me.

A spare ECU and set of coils and leads are basically essentials, as they can suddenly give up the ghost and if you can't locate replacement parts, you're off the road.

Some people have been aghast that I was actually driving my car around without spare parts in the boot.

Another metering head is also very nice to have.

What's better though, buyers remorse, or wondering what you passed up?

It's a tough call, sometimes!

i would be as well,

Some people have been aghast that I was actually driving my car instead of tucking it away in the garage and polishing it every weekend whilst touching myself
