Fine for no insurance.

Don't know if anyone has ever come across this one,but my dad has just called to say he's got a letter fining him £100 from the MID.

He has a series 1 Land Rover which is registered in the UK but is currently parked up for the winter in his barn in Brittany. He cancelled the insurance about a month ago but left the Tax disc on it ,i.e. didn't SORN it. He spoke to MID who said he must SORN it then spoke to Doovla who will only SORN it if he sends tax disc in obviously, he then stupidly told them the cars in France, they've now told him if he doesn't bring it back immediately he'll have to permanently export it.

My question is this,if he pays the fine and I go onto the MID site to add it onto my traders policy is this likely to go away? Or once Doovla and MID have taken an interest is it likely to get worse.

Tell them the Landy has come back to blighty and SORN to resolve?  Or move to Brittany and sack the lot of em off.

Yes but the tax disc is there,he's here! He is thinking about registering it out there as it spends more time there than here, he usually tows it back and forth on a big farm trailer. Last year the transfer box shit itself on his Disco on the way to the ferry so he got theS1 off the trailer, loaded the overladen Disco on ,then dragged the lot to France with the poor little S1- you wouldn't want to be behind that.

Yup. That's something they can do sadly. If you cancel the insurance, you must also declare SORN.

Where the car is currently located is fuck all of their business.

In Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union authorities could tell you where to bring your car, in England they can't.

SORN the car and tell them to shove it.

And yes, thanks to our beloved former Stalinist regime in the UK under comrade Bliarvitch, it is now a legal requirement to have a car insured unless it's SORNed.

Get a duplicate tax disc from the PO, then send that back to them?

Or stick it on your trader's policy and ignore the fine - that's what I did when they fined me for the Stagea, and I haven't heard owt back since*.

I would attempt to SORN it online, presumably its tax exempt so you dont need to worry about getting a refund of the tax money blah blah blah. It might not work, but I think it should, defo worth a try. Unless the V5 is in France as well in which case forget it as you need the reference number off it.

Failing that download the SORN declaration off the DVLA site and send that off to them.

As ManJunk says its fuck all to do with them where the car is, as long as the paperwork is kept up to date. Half my fleet is sorned but located in France.
