Lankytim Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 Hi all, Just got the Multipla on the road and it's MEGA, the only issue is that it runs on 3 cylinders when cold but after 5 minutes or so happily runs of all 4. I'm thinking it could be a clogged injector but has anybody else got experience of this engine? It's the GM lump and I think its the same as the ones found in other GM products like Vectra and Astra. I hope it's easily fixable!
Micrashed Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 Possibly unrelated, possibly not.Mrs Shed's C8 has had an EGR-ectomy and runs like a twat with one leg tied to the other for 5 minutes or so when (very) cold. But once warm runs fine. Perhaps yours has a wedged open EGR. saucedoctor 1
saucedoctor Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 ^ this sounds very like it to me. One of my neighbours had a V***hall with that engine in it, and the EGR was fubar. If you can, check for oil in the intake system.
Lankytim Posted December 2, 2013 Author Posted December 2, 2013 I've read that the EGR can be a shit on these. Can they be deleted with a bit of coke can or something?
Hertz Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 Are there any cheap code fault readers you can get for these? If it's the GM lump maybe a Vauxhall one would work?
Albert Ross Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 It's a Fiat 1910cc engine. GM use it, as do Alfa, Cadillac, Lancia, Suzuki (allegedly) and Saab. It's not great. Prone to injectors dribbling., glow plugs failing (likely on this one) and seizing into the head. 90/105/110/115/120/ and 150 bhp units, relative to number of valves and inlet tract fitted. Also used in the Doblo, Punto (Yup, true) Bravo, Croma, Stilo, and all sorts.... best avoided. Keep the belt intervals adhered too, keep your eyes on the water pump bearing too. Barry Cade 1
Mr_Bo11ox Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 I blanked the EGR in my doblo. Didn't seem to make any odds to anything though!
Des Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 I'm 20 years out of date so I'll suggest a faulty heater plug. Twiggy 1
Vin Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 I had the 105 bhp flavour unit in my Brava. I thought it was a great engine. With regular servicing, I did 235,000 miles. New glowplugs and a AFM were required. I got rid at 275k, my sis is still running it... I can't help you on your problem unfortunately, as it wasn't something I ever encountered. If it's EGR related, you can easily get EGR blanking plates for these. My mate blanked the EGR off in his Stilo without any trouble.
Lankytim Posted December 3, 2013 Author Posted December 3, 2013 No smoke when running, no chicken nuggets yet as i'm not running it on bio diesel at the moment. I'm going to knockan egr blank plate up and see what happens. It seems to run perfectly at speed or under load... It will be fun fixing it up though.
solid61 Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 Ill 2nd that,my stilo has the jtd in 115hp guise and its now done155k and needed nothing apart from regular servicing, still goes really well and uses no oil at all,i think its a much better engine than many of its competitors at the time.
Micrashed Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 EGR blanked on the C8 - all the shit now gets thrown down the zorst rather than sent round the engine for another burning session. It are GR9 when caning it on the M6....
Lankytim Posted December 3, 2013 Author Posted December 3, 2013 I've blanked off the EGR with a home made blanking plate made from 3mm steel- it;s made FA difference! I checked the wiring to each injector and pulled a plug off, now the EML light is illuminated. Fuck$ocks.
Des Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 Wiring to injectors? Jesus I'm really out of date.
Albert Ross Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 When you checked the injector wiring, did the misfire get worse on three of them, but stay the same on just one? If so, there's your issue.
Lankytim Posted December 4, 2013 Author Posted December 4, 2013 It got worse, so I figured that that cylinder was OK. I noticed that the EML had come on at that point and got the hump so didn't check the others. I got the EML light out by disconnecting the battery overnight so i'm not so worried about setting it off again. I took it for a good razz and properly caned the bollocks off it last night. The EGR blank has made more of a difference than I thought, it runs much more smoothly and has quite a bit more pep. I think the injectors are worthy of further investigation. Maybe a few tanks of bio could de-crud them.
