Tempted to throw a cheeky bid on this

I'd like something lazy and comfy for the winter and these seem to fit the bill perfectly. I don't do many miles so the fuel consumption isn't really an issue, plus it's OMG 1/4 MILE V8 RACE FOR PINK SLIPS NOT HEMI 308 WINDSOR, shouldn't break down and silly cheap for what they are. Anyone ever owned one or able to convince me it's a bad idea?

Failing that there is the GS300

That one is nice and local, but something just doesn't seem right about that advert. Maybe I'm being paranoid?

The guy I brought my Accord coupe was also selling a GS in black, 12 months ticket full history and it looked pretty immaculate with 135k on the clock, he was asking £800 for it.

He hadn't had a viewing for it in a month, everything else had come and gone including scabby jags, old mondeos, escrotes and other trade in tat, it was just no one wanted it because of the so so styling and the big engine, he asked me if I wanted to try it and he'd knock £150 off if I wanted it, it was still there a month later, kinda wish I'd tried it now.

Big jap V6 or V8s don't seem to have any interest to most people, too expensive to run and no image to make it desirable, sounds kinda perfect shiter fodder to me.

Had an LS400 a couple of years ago, £1200 with full MOT, did everything you could reasonably ask it to do, only fault was a few missing pixels on the centre console display, had 206k on the clock when I bought it, never squeaked, rattled or put a foot wrong in 18 months, averaged 22mpg, went like a rocket when pushed or happily bumbled along in traffic when necessary, hard to fault but just not engaging to drive somehow, and pretty useless in any kind of snow or ice, buy one whilst they are cheap, you won't regret it or do better for the money, just don't expect a huge grin every trip!

As both a passenger and driver of Dad's first (he's owned two) LS400 - the first car I drove after passing my test, no less - I can report that they are both wonderful and horrible, I shall elaborate thus:

Engine noise is a tad too refined for what's under the bonnet.

Interior has that strange solid and well put together while also cheap and not quite luxury feel common to big Japanese stuff

Power delivery is somewhere above adequate but not astonishing until you hit kickdown (autobox, did they come in manual?) at which point they're hilariously rapid.

Handling is peculiar with the steering getting tighter and more responsive they more you push it.

Power steering can feel a bit too light and vague at pootling speeds, so it's probably best to thrash it everywhere if you're not worried about mpgs.

I don't know how fast they go, but it's somewhere past 'very'.  Sheffield hot hatches and white vans did not like being left behind by the giffer barge.

Comfortable, definitely, but the seats are perhaps a little more firm than I like.  On the Approved Autoshite Scale, seats are somewhere between a 740 and a BX for firmness and support but without the internal organ ruining hardness of an Audi.

Column stalks are the wrong way around, and I'd often accidentally put main beam on when exiting roundabouts, much to the chagrin of other road users.

The centre seat on the rear bench is ROCK HARD and is only really for show.  Only put people you dislike in this seat.

You have no idea where the boot ends, so reversing into things is a distinct risk.

Tescos bollards are no match for LS400 doors, as my brother found out by accident once.

Having driving one I can safely say I wouldn't want to own one myself as they feel a bit too modern and refined, but I would heartily encourage others to own one if they're after a surprising luxobarge.

My old man had one for a couple of years, early one on a j plate I think they look ace sometimes but some just look ugly.

It was mega reliable this was bought for 1400 from a dealer I changed the oil and filters twice on it he had it for two odd years and not a single problem, it had done 180k as well. I would defo have one.

I read a original review of one a while back in a old car magazine I had and they raved about it. The work that went into making them so refined etc etc was bonkers.

Alan Partridge did a decent job of convincing the usual bell-ends to buy an Audi or BMW so you can drive a Lexus without looking like a complete prick, Buy one.

Thought you broke that for parts?

Have to say that very little on that list sounds horrible, I have no friends anyway so don't care about the rear seats. By indicators on the wrong side do you mean then right?

Yeah they are on the right but that takes like 0.4 seconds to get used to, a lot of jap stuff from that area had them on the right.

Thats because Japs are RHD as standard. British cars have the indicators on the right too from back when we had a motor industry and didn't just build cars for export.

Not broke it yet because:

A) went on the lash for my mates birthday friday, and still feel god awful as i type.

B) i'm ignoring all complaints from where it's stored.

So at the moment it's still here.

Upullit in Inverkeithing have a Jewish racing gold LS400 for sale undamaged for 695. Think the mot might just be out so there may be a deal to be had.

Jag seemed good, until I noticed a certain late 90s turbocharged coupe for sale 3 miles from me. Naturally the only rational thing to do was to go straight over and put a deposit down
