I think I've found the problem! It seems that the inner most part of the drum (the bit that houses the wheel bearing and slides over the stub axle) has been catching on the nuts that hold the back plate. I suspect it's because I didn't read the manual when I first had the drum off, and I over-tightened the wheel bearing (thinking it should be tight when actually it shouldn't).

 

I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do next. I have new drums, but need to swap the bearings and seals over to it, so if I've damaged something there, I'm not going to cure it by fitting new drums. Bit annoying this as it looks like I don't really need new drums and shoes at all! Stupidity FTL.

 

Any thoughts? Would a new wheel bearing kit sort it out do you reckon?

Seems strange. Is it both sides?

 

Are you sure there is not a spacer which should go onto the stub first?

 

I can't see how overtightening the bearing would move it in the hub.

If you have run it with the bearing tight the bearing is almost certainly toast. I think a new bearing will see it right, as long as the stub axle isn't damaged.

I didn't run it like that, but thankfully read the manual before going for a spin, so slackened it back off. New bearing is only a fiver, so I think I'll do that. 

 

Sadly, I've now discovered that the stub axle on the other side is heavily scored! Ever wish you hadn't started a job?

I wouldn't worry about the stub. Just try the bearing on it and if it is 'baggy' centre pop the upper bit and assemble with a bit of loctite bearing fit

I'm going to replace the lot. Can't see that running new bearings on scored stub axles is going to be a good idea. It would be much better if I stopped treating cars as if I was going to keep them forever...
