continuous insurance enforcement PROBLEMS

Is anyone having problems with the continuous insurance enforcement rules?

I don't mean the having insurance bit , no one uninsured should be driving

I have no issue with making sure everyone is insured, taxed MOTed etc , the problem I have is a classic carry on britian paperwork /rules issue !

I have a number of cars, I've bought a replacement for one of them , and the one it's replacing is going to be scrapped ,

So I moved the insurance to the "new" car

The old car is taxed till the end of the month , so not worth cashing in , and I'll be scrapping it next week , so would be 2 weeks Taxed and no insurance

(The Horror - what a crime !!!!!)

But under the rules , if MIB scans they will see no insurance but tax and send me a warning letter ,

Easy (or so I thought ) I'll ring DVLA , declare sorn from today (it's ok to have no insurance if SORN ), no nasty letter - Job done

Ring DVLA

can I sorn today , oh no ... The Sorn will start form June 1st (when Tax runs out ) , no I say , can you SORN it from today ,

No sir , you have to send in an application form for sorn , ok I say can I do this on the Phone , NO, by post , it takes 4 weeks !!

But it will be scrapped on Monday , Well sir , she says, Just send in the notice of owner change to the scrap yard on Monday, that takes 4 weeks .

But I say , I'm trying to do this properly and not get a nasty warning letter for having no insurance on a taxed car all be it for only 2 weeks

Well she says it's ok , when MIB runs again it will show as scrapped

But I say , I dont want any nasty letters - AT ALL , yes sir I understand , so send in the form it will take 4 weeks and just ignore the letter when you get it

BUT I DONT WANT A LETTER !!!!

Oh dear grief ,

So I say , there is no way to do the proper thing and declare immediate sorn from today to avoid a letter

It's only a warning sir....

I gave up at this point !

I started to feel like Basil Faulty !!!

When I bought the Jag it there was a gap between the DayInsure policy I used to collect and store it and getting around to arranging a proper classic policy. The DVLA did send me a letter after a while, but it wasn't aggressively threatening or anything, just told me to sort it out (which I promptly did). No kittens were hurt in the process.

(Needless to say the car was kept off the road for this time - see last year's AS calendar for details.)

Just chill out, you’re not going to get any Mossad agents turning up on your doorstep for having a car taxed but uninsured for a few days prior to scrapping it.

The bureaucracy just got me ..

Should be a Grace period of 5 weeks if it takes 4 weeks to sort !!

Although the DVLA can be a bunch of chumps, they are usually pretty good at sending a letter out first. I've been caught a few times by forgetting to SORN stuff that's not lived at my house (out of sight, out of mind and all that) and every time bar one I responded to the letter by SORNing immediately and no fines were had.

The one time I failed, was a car I thought I'd filled out the new keeper stuff for and then moved house. They spent so long tracking me down that by the time they did, it had gone to debt collectors and even words of one syllable or less failed to get them to relent.

There's also no guarantee that they will send out even a warning letter. I have, over the last year or so, had a number of vehicles registered in my name and on the road but not on the MID, and I've probably had warning letters in 25% of cases.

I'm actually currently waiting to see what will happen in the case of the Stagea - they sent me a warning letter and like a twat I completely forgot to do anything about it until after the grace period had expired. They then demanded that I pay a £80 penalty or they would take me to court. I'm obviously not going to pay as I was insured - the offence is keeping a car without insurance, not keeping a car that doesn't appear on the MID - so will be curious to see if a court summons is forthcoming. Haven't heard owt so far though.
