Gems From GM

I think it would be wrong to talk about the cars and leave the commercial side completely out of it.

They wrung every last drop out of this model, it even soldiered on way past the point that the Chevanne was meant to take over.

Why? Because it was a totally brilliant van that may well have been outclassed and become outdated by its rivals it still offered practicality, a good driving position,a gearchange that was short and ever so sweet, an engine that took loads of abuse and just kept chugging on and, most importantly, the rear load area was a nice boxy shape and could consume a suprising amount of stuff.

Ok, Im biased, I had one ( ex telecom before I actually went to work for them) and I loved it to bits until it fell to bits.

They talk about "scene tax" with Fords and VWs but the price of a good HA is now pretty damn high, from stuff ive seen.

I really do want to own another before I cark it.

In saying that, Id love to own a PROPER early Bedford TK but their prices are way, way over my head.

All may not be as it seems.

Perhaps the Astra was innocently parked with its rear end levitated three feet off the ground when some hooligan in a 106...

One should never forget the legendary Opel Blitz, from the days when industrialists from the good ole USA used to do a fair amount of business with a certain Mr Hitler.

Coolest Vauxhall of the lot, and that's said by someone who loved his PA Velox!

I'm going to be controversial here:

and

(to a lesser degree)

Having owned the top one for a year and used the bottom one for 4 years as a work hack, they're unpretentious, nice enough to drive, solidly built and pretty reliable. The coupe was a real looker, especially in that colour, I just couldn't gel with it after my initial enthusiasm though, the 1.6 was prone to niggly issues and not ideal for the car. It's now in the hands of someone who's put Opel badges on it for some reason. The Izuzu diesel estate soaked up a lot of neglect and punishment and just would not die.

Novas on the other hand, no. Despite restoring one last year, it was a fairly horrible thing to drive and not a patch on a similarly aged AX.

The last Cavaliers get a token vote as my father had one new as a company car in Envoy rep-spec, super basic but a million light years ahead of the years of rusty BL tat it came after. Very itchy seats!

I'd actually like to nominate this...

Seen here earning me a trophy in Paphos Classic Vehicle Club's autotest day a year ago! :D It had issues, some of them recurring, but Mrs R liked it (to my continuing amazement) and it was a tough old beast. The tailgate said it was a Vauxhall (originally sold in the UK) but lift the hood and everything - everything - had Isuzu stamped on it.

The Vauxhall Breed's got style.

Last ever complete Luton design was that. Too big, too expensive and they sold about 40% of the Cortina output and less than the 101 FC it replaced. Great car tho.

These really were GM gems as far as I'm concerned:

This was a freebie as the autobox was pissing atf.

Shoved a box out of a later 24valve in it and it was an excellent car.

Wonder where it is now?

Burnt-out cars are quite a regular feature of abandoned railway tunnels :D

The Cavalier is in Glenfarg South tunnel in Perthshire. http://www.flickr.com/photos/30854514@N ... 308777129/

Until recently there was a K10 Micra behind it but it literally rusted away to nothing.

yes, that's what made me think it was the tunnel at merthyr. there's about 6 cars in there that have been there at least 20 years (because that was when the road access was blocked off)
