Ford Fusion 1.4Tdci - Knackered Fuel Pump??

Actual Facts are a bit limited at the moment as the car belongs to my folks, who still want to try and sort things out for themselves, but have a habit of being too trusting. (£1000 yearly Insurance for a Fusion anyone, Full NCD)

Basically car has been running fine, but would not start the other day. I was at work so advised them to call Green Flag out to get it started. Guy comes along and gets it running with a bit of "carb starter" in the intake. Ran fine from then on, so I thought a split in a hose somewhere causing an air lock/break.

Advised Dad to get it to a garage when it was running, as more than likely would happen again.

Got a call last night to say car would not start. Went up and had a look but could not get the thing going. Tried the primer bulb, but did not seem to be getting any diesel through at all. Attached a tow rope and dragged the car round the block to get it going. Running fine... Can be stopped and restarted without issue.

Drove it down to his garage, and brought him home.

Garage have just rung him to say the the Fuel pump has failed and needs replacing???

Now one again showing my ignorance, but can the fuel pump fail and the car run or is there an in tank lift pump that could be the problem. ie the system is not priming itself.

Dont know any more details, until I speak to the garage tomorrow, but just cant see how it can be a pump failure when the car runs fine when its "running"

Thanks again

Just a quick Google on this, apparently the fuel return pipe is known for snuffing it

What you are saying makes sense to me, if the car can be persuaded to run properly by whatever means, the pump's not knackered. Perhaps they do mean the lift pump though, I imagine it will have some sort of low-pressure pump before the main one.

The supply and return pipes are prone to rubbing through on those, that's the best place to start.

I've known them to blow past the injectors but never to the point it wouldn't start.
