I had a '65 Corsair in 1969. 1.7 litre V4 with the carb sitting between the two cylinder heads in the middle of the V. Unfortunately when the carb decided to leak it filled up the V with petrol and it went whooomph whilst I was driving along the North Circular road heading towards a main intersection. The first I new that tthere was a fire in the engine bay was when the paint on the white bonnet started bubbling and smoking. I tried to brake but the fluid must have boiled so I yanked on the handbrake which was a sort of umbrella handle thing under the dash and wasn't much cop at the best of times. It eventually rolled to a halt just before the junction and a chap ran out of the petrol forecourt with an extinguisher which didn't go off so ha had to go and get another one which did put the fire out. He said the car looked most spectacular coming down the road with flames shooting out all over the place.

They should have made a film about that - a much better story line.
