New shite required: but what??

I have persuaded the other half to have a pick up as the family car, and also for me to use when shooting in the winter so all i need now is a reliable, cheap, economical and fun banger to drive the 60 odd mile commute each day.

Now common sense tells me to buy a low millage toyota corolla (our last one was fantastic) but i keep looking at more obscure options, such as proton, VW caddy and Champ vans, I've also seriously considered a 4x4 Subaru Justy (its justy so ugly!!)

 

So what other options do i have? A 4x4 would be useful such as the justy but i would also need to see at least 35-40mpg. Any ideas?

Id like something a bit unusual but not impractical as there will also be some longer drives up to 300 miles a day.

 

Have around 2k to spend, less is better though
