John F Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 ... not for 4x4 monging purposes. Oi! You don''t have to be a mong to go off-road driving. (but it helps...)
Guest Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 I know, and I have some moderate off roading Landy skillz, but there are, alas, many mongs in the off roader world.
richardthestag Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 and some coolant loss, but there's no header tank pressurisation when cold, no bubbling, sludge or mayo, and no wet plugs. I may give the thing another shake of the mighty K Seal, if only because that's the Rovery way. leaky cooling system would stop the system from still being pressured when cold Like you spotted, bubbling coolant, mayo and steam cleaned spark plugs are all signs of OMGHGF or even worse slipped liners / cracked block. I had the latter in my first Range Rover and that went on for 40k miles courtesy of an annual k-seal top up. It did go bang in the end though. One easy test for a good rover v8 cooling system is that when warm the temp gauge is about 1/3 and the top rad hose can still be squeezed. if it is rockard then you have problems regardless of absense of mayo etc. Is the thermostat working or even fitted? My working thermostat takes about 1 mile driving from cold to start blowing warm air out of the heater and 2 miles to register as warm on the gauge. No thermostat and a blocked rad might appear normal from cold! but is not going to help otherwise. 2 bolts and one hoseclip to get the thermostat out and in a pan of boiling water to test it. How tidy is the rad. They furr up pretty quick. Just had mine recored by Boston rads, brilliant service and cheaper than everyone else. Is the viscous fan fitted / working, it should roar when cold and after a couple of miles driving should be pretty quiet. Likely places for leaks are loose inlet manifold, any of the heater or coolant hoses, waterpump bearing and of course the rad which you might not see if you have the viscous fan shroud in place - which you should have of course Cheers, off to see the dentist now so have my cammo boiler suit and aviators ready for the drive.
Guest Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Well, the coolant blow was indeed a hose, as suspected. That's one way of giving the engine a high pressure steam clean. The hose that blew was the one between the water pump and the heater. A new one has cost me all of three quid. That's ace, Rimmer Brothers! New battery, new Earth cable, new starter motor (sixty notes), and that's enough for now.
Guest Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Thanks for the topz tipz, Richard. This is all good stuff to put in the bank o' knowing stuff. A new thermostat is going in as well - the car didn't have one before. The fan shroud is indeed there. John at JJ Motors, who has one of these cranky old grids himself (same year, as well), tells me that the car is a top bargain, confirming what I already believed to be the case, so thanks once again, Red5. Hell, after I move I will miss having John and other John two doors away from my gaff.
red5 Posted March 21, 2013 Author Posted March 21, 2013 Told ya - Vicious coupling is as per spec - roar/quiet. Cowling still present. No stat, Rad looked ok fin -wise. Didn't overheat or snot anything. Bugger, forgot 'wrong' battery in massive excitement / sadness about moving the old girl on. So apologies and so on old chap. Still missing her. Ah, the wallet pain fades with age, leaving just the v8 elastic band effect to bring a faraway smile to my face.....
Guest Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Yup, the radiator looks fine, and the water pump is fine too.
Guest Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Cauld blaws the wind frae east to west, The drift is driving sairly; Sae loud and shill's I hear the blastI'm sure it's winter fairly. Up in the morning's no for me, Up in the morning early; When a' the hills are covered wi' snaw, I'm sure it's winter fairly. The birds sit chittering in the thorn, A' day they fare but sparely; And lang's the night frae e'en to mornI'm sure it's winter fairly Up in the morning's no for me, Up in the morning early; When a' the hills are covered wi' snaw, I'm sure it's winter fairly. Screw you, Robbie Burns, you whimp! I am up early to feck about in the snow - off to collect the non rusty bonnet, using the Rangeyshed as an, er, shed. By coincidence, the bonnet is located about four miles from my new house, in a steepy and deepy part of the Chilterns, but I have to get there from that Laaaaaaaandan first. 4WD SNOSKILLZ R us, I hope. Pathetic boy toy happiness is pathetic.
beko1987 Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 'Er indoors is piloting the meriva about without too much woe ATM, you should be fine! Its the other mong drivers you need to worry about
red5 Posted March 23, 2013 Author Posted March 23, 2013 Damn your eyes man ! Reduced to driving the 205 Quatre Vitesse Superleggera or 2.8 Frontera. Dons flame pants and waits for the hysterical Vauxhallhatersâ„¢ outpourings. Both are ace in the snow, but not like driving your lounge over hills etc.
Guest Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Mong drivers in abundance yesterday, with the M40 a sea of smashed up cars. I particularly love the twunts who drive silver and grey and white cars on snow days without any lights. The bloke who sold me the good, unrusty bonnet has a Landy/Rangey breaker's yard and repair shop just a few miles from my new pad. Here is his car, complete with mad 97 Litre truck engine, and air suspension. He has sheds full of Landy and Rangey bits. Driveway to new pad - steeper than it looks in the photo:- Guys, let's OFF ROAD. Lastly, here is the real reason for moving house. I have known this pub for years, and it is possibly the perfect country pub. Friendly people on both sides of the bar, good Brakspear's beer, great food, an old cat, a young dog, and several open fires and wood burning stoves. There are good walks close by, and the owner has a cool 110 V8 Landy.

beko1987 Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 That walls been taken down so many times before by mong car drivers. Serious speed can be carried down (and up) that hill, but I always slow on that corner, for fear of doing that! Its a shame they closed the ridgeway to vehicles, its only 400 yards from your driveway!

Guest Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 PS: The replacement bonnet is a sagey green colour, has almost no rust on it, and has a good heat shield and non wonky support. I may swap the bonnets over without painting the new one first, just for some comedy shed value, but will spray it red eventually. I shall probably do it myself with conspicuous lack of equipment, preparation, patience, and skill, for the further amusement of the troops. If any of you Landynutz need a new source of parts, contact Roy at JSLandrovers in Radnage, Bucks. Top bloke, with plenty of old tat to sell.
