Mate of mine a few years ago put a wanted ad in the local paper, asking for an interesting electric guitar. He got a reply from an idiot who had a vintage Fender Strat, had no idea what it was, and sold it to my pal for next to nowt :D

The wanted ad was in Classic Car Weekly.

Today it stayed dry here long enough for me to finish valeting the inside. Here are some pics of how she looks now:

Charles finally makes a special guest appearance, this was the second load of dirty water in the operation!

The inside now looks a much more inviting place!

I take it that's the stereo top middle of the dash, any more info or close-up pics? Looks intriguing :)

Yes that is the stereo. It's the original one made by Voxon. Quite advanced for it's day with electronic tuning and it's removable too! Only an FM/MW/LW radio, no cassette though. Presently it does not work, but it looks like it has been re-fitted and not connected up as there are some radio related wires loose in the glovebox! No close up pictures of it at the moment I'm afraid.

OK I lied! I do have a close up of it, but alas it was taken before it was cleaned!

Awesome interior cleaning skills! Emptying the crud from a wet vac after cleaning a really dirty interior is always guaranteed to give me the "dry heaves".Love the cranked-back gearlever, very reminiscent of Mk1 Cavaliers and Hillman Hunters.

Sort it out, Welfare. Can't be getting the heaves now, not with all that brightly coloured poo you have to mop from tiny backsides (and wherever else it finishes up).

It's not so much the brightly coloured stuff that gets me, but that tar-like substance that comes out of the blighters when you first get them home...:shock::shock::shock:

On another note, those Voxson radios are mad. Removeable faceplates back in 1977?? Far out man.

Tar stuff long since gone; things went pear-shaped when we both had a curry the other night, which quickly made it's presence felt in the milk...Ahem. What kind of connectors did those ancient removable stereos have, anyway?

Posted

If memory serves me correctly about four wires out the back! Or do you mean between the front panel and the back?

Posted

I meant between the unit (I assume you pull out the whole thing!) and the car! I assumed it would be some kind of 3.5mm jack setup rather than the little clip-in connector you get these days.

Hoping to do some work on it after the F1 race. I'll try to remember to have a look!

Started the mechanical overhaul after the F1 today. Did the cambelt first and when draining the coolant this happened:

Now I need a new thermostat! After removing the old belt I discovered it was well due for a change:

So now she has a new timing belt, power steering belt, alternator belt and new plugs and leads:

Next jobs are to fix the cooling system, fit the new master cylinder, rebuild the carb, change the oil and filter and repair the exhaust!

Mrs P, who is a midwife, tells me that the tarry stuff is called meconium, and if you get it under your nails it won't come out. Looks like you just did an oil change on a diesel Transit.

Yep, that's the stuff.Tell your missus a tub of Swarfega and one of those little spark plug brushes with the wire bristles cleans fingernails up a treat after coming in contact with it... :lol:See folks, come to Autoshite for the cars and get some grooming tips into the bargain.
