pompei Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Recently got a 9-5 Aero (2.3 turbo) which is very nice but is looking like it's going to be too heavy on petrol for the miles I do. I'm thinking of an LPG conversion. According to the forums, there is a mixed picture on the success/desirability of this. Has anyone any experience of these conversions? Is there any reason why the conversion should not work as well with a turbocharged engine? Apparently attempts to install a system on the Fiat 20v turbo haven't been that good. Any recommendations for installers I could talk to? Many thanks
Spiny Norman Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Personally I'm never convinced by lpg conversions, particularly if I was going to the one paying the £1500-odd to get it done. Like the Diseasel argument, you'd need to be doing a fair old mileage to cover the cost I reckon. Only an opinion mind, I've never actually owned an lpg car, but I've rejected a few on account of them having it fitted. Also, is a Saab 9-5 that bad on fuel if it's in good order and driven sensibly?
pompei Posted November 30, 2012 Author Posted November 30, 2012 25 -ish mpg mixed driving. I had got used to double that from the previous diesel.
CortinaDave Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Have owned 3 LPG cars and it works- and very well IF the conversions a good one. I did tens of thousands of miles in an LPG calibra with no fault and loved it. Had the kit moved onto a ford probe when the calibra died and it was crap ... Backfiring, overheating etc in a car that up til that point was hassle free. It seems to like to take out head gaskets so anything weak in that dept is asking for trouble on LPG, and you have to make sure the ignition system is in good order as an LPG car will show weaknesses in the spark etc much sooner than petrol. Get a fitter who's well recommended and on a car others have run on gas successfully and you're laughing
