Bluebird clutch slipping - can it be adjusted??

Just been for a drive up the M6 in the bluey and noticed the clutch is starting to slip in higher gears, I've not noticed it driving around town at all. It has a cable operated clutch and although the Haynes book of lies says clutch slip might be cured by cable adjustment it doesn't seem to say how!

Typically I have just spent £40 on a new exhaust, if it needs a new clutch it won't get used.

look and see if there is a threaded bit somewhere in the mechanism

if the cable is too tight then it could cause the clutch to be pressed all the time, if you know what I mean

you should be able to lift the clutch pedal a bit. if it is hard up against it's upper stop limit then loosen the cable a bit

if you can't get reverse without a crunch then you have loosened it too far

Thanks for the reply, there is an adjuster on the lever at the clutch end. The pedal has no upward movement at all and the bite point has always been high by the way.

I'll take a pic of the adjuster.

I would say just back that off till there is defo a tiny little bit of slack in the cable they give it a try, if its still slipping then its new clutch time unfortunatley

So undo the lock nut on the right, loosen the cable so there is more thread showing on the right of the adjuster (lever moves towards front of car) then tighten up lock nut and cross fingers!

It's o.k around town but if it's had it I guess it won't be for too long.

exactly

more specifically, loosen the cable until the clutch pedal isn't jammed up as high as it will go, and then lock it up

probably if the clutch pedal ends up sitting about the same height as the brake pedal it won't be too far out

Just had a look, loosened lock nut then moved the adjuster 3 or 4 turns down the thread and re-tightened locknut. All gears selectable so went for a drive down the dual carrigeway and all seems hunky dory. :D

I did find the bit in the Haynes book eventually that also talks about pedal height adjustment so it is there and does say the cable should be adjusted periodically if the the clutch starts to slip.

The bite point was always right at the top of the pedal movement and I just thought that was how it was on this particular car otherwise I would have adjusted it sooner..

Hopefully fit the exhaust tomorrow... :D

Thanks again for the advice folks.

You learn a whole new driving technique trying to get forward propulsion in a car with a slipping clutch. Gently gently on the accelerator. Even more so if its a Landy with a car trailer behind. :)
