Right - someone recommend a welder \ fabricator in the NW...

I need several requirements meeting. They have to be within 100 miles of where I am now. That place is Trafford.

I need two new floorpans, some sill work and a chassis leg straightening on my Amazon to get it back on the road, plus some other brake work which SCTSH_ANDY will do when he's not cleaning various bits of his Saab with his 'aye, cunt' Vax Exploderisor and possibly some new bumpers hanging on and a new windscreen seal fitting to stop the bastard leaking.

You lot must know someone. I'd supply the panels, bumpers and endless inane conversation. The car has to go inside for the entire time period it's being worked on. I will not have it sat outside in this weather. I can pay the going rate for the work - the cash is waiting.

What about now?

Still Trafford.

People who need not apply:

a. Our flakey friends just off the East Lancs,

b. People who have problems working on something that isn't an aircooled VW despite professing to be 'all marque' restorers \ fabricators,

c. People whose quote doubles for no given reason over a six month timeframe for exactly the same agreed amount of work.

GO!

Joncedric over on RR is top notch. He will work on anything old and is a real enthusiast. He's in Shrewsbury. I can PM his number to you if you like.

What about the chaps who did Pete-M's 604?

They're just off the East Lancs.... Fantastic metalwork, but they're not the best at budget or timescale management.

I was very pleased with the work they did on my car. Though it was quite a lot of money I felt they were good value - done properly bodywork isn't cheap because it is so time consuming. Given the volume and complexity of my car's welding I reckon they cost less than anywhere else for my kind of job - certainly all the quotes I got from other bodyshops to repair my Jag were much higher than my final bill from Dave and Gray.

I'm not knocking their work at all. Dave and Gray are both brilliant at the work they do. In fact, that massive Foden truck they have in is a job I recommended them to do.

What happened with my Jag, however, is a different matter entirely. Took it up there for a bit of welding last December, a few weeks later their next door neighbour crashed into it in the snow (despite me asking them to keep the Jag inside), D&G weren't interested at all in getting it fixed or chasing Tom to sort it. Eventually, after seven months I managed to persuade Tom to replace the bumper (which he did, badly, after things were gonna get heavily legal). D&G still hadn't done the welding the car was there for "We're waiting for Tom to fix the bumper". Meanwhile the car sat outside collecting scratches and dents, with a flat battery and flat tyre. Eventually they said "we'll put it in for an MOT for you", which they did, it failed on a list of stuff which I paid to get fixed. Got it back with an MOT a couple of days ago.... was the welding it went there for done? No.

Also, because it sat outside for nigh on a year it has deteriorated somewhat. The interior isn't clean, the paint is covered in cat scratches and the battery is fucked.

Would I use 'em again? Yes, but only for work on bare shells.

I don't know if he is still there but i used to use Jeff the welder who used to have a place in Sevenways Stretford and then moved to the little indusrial place in Gorse Hill just before Pepper parts, he is the doggies doo dahs for welding and I watched the progress of a Yank pick up he rebuilt from scratch over a period of time he also converted his Vw camper to run on Sierra mechanicals. He is at the bottom of an ally where there is a garage and body shop, I think its called longford industrial estate, if you want I can see if he is still there and get his number for you.

Yes please. He doesn't have 'issues' about working on stuff that isn't a camper van, does he?

Not prepared to use D&G because my car would be left outside and their quote would mysteriously double one day for no given reason.

To give D&G credit, the work on the 604 was spot on and they've got a fair bit more indoor space now than they had earlier this year. Also, Dave Rustbucket's Jag was kept inside at all times.

I think that when Tom twatted my Jag they lost all interest in it. They didn't want to work on it because they were waiting for Tom, and Tom used that as an excuse also saying he was waiting for them.

Their welding and fabricating work is first rate, but they have to be interested in what they're doing. They weren't interested in my car, so thy just left it outside and ignored it.

It is going elsewhere for the remaining work.

Bare in mind that Dave and Gray don't have the Whale taking up part of the unit anymore either.

He will weld anything, I had my sierra de locked and the holes welded and painted over (paint shop next door) he also does the mot failures from the garage in the same place, he plated the suspension tops on my carlton which I wanted to keep in good nick and I said I did not want to see the repairs, you could not tell it was done, he is a true gent and does not mess around, will try and get his number this weekend for you.

Many thanks mate, will bear him in mind.

I may have found someone anyway closer to home - but it's another contact to try.
