Citroen XM road trip - electrical fault fixes itself

Top tip:- don't put foot to floor until the road is clear as an XM turbo moves like shit off a shovel!

It can shift when needed alright. :D

Can you do a favour and stick it on fuelly.com ? I'm curious to see what kind of mpg the TCT gets in an XM as opposed to a Xantia... I'm told the XM is more economical.

Nice one, £280 is nothing to get a car through the MOT, I've had mates with 3 & 4 year old cars that have cost more than that to put through the test.

I have been contemplating an XM with that engine and one I was interested in the seller took pride in telling me he averaged 36mpg in normal driving and about 26 or so when towing. I think thats pretty good if it does get around those figures.

It has a trip computer and it was averaging 35 or so round Cheltenham. I floored it on the way home and had it running on tickover quite a lot. I think on a run 35-40 is achievable with light use of the right foot. I'm goIng to say now that the first tankful may just be a fun one.

Well, my XM has been used regularly for the past six weeks, seeing it on a long run to Exeter (35mpg) and use round town (woeful mpg) and on the drive to work (24-6mpg).

So, what issues have I had with it since I got it?

Well, all of the electrics are still working, it's a Citroen of 90s vintage so this is in itself remarkable.

Amazingly, for a 90s Citroen with an electrical system that would be state of the art only aboard an Apollo spacecraft, or inside a ZX81, one of its annoying faults has cured itself. Yes, the engine management light now works - and goes off! And there was me thinking how I could bodge it using only an air filter box, gaffa tape and a carbon filter, while on a trip to the moon and back.

So, I'm glad I replaced the bolt for the spare wheel carrier that had seized solid, as I've had cause to fit a new wheel on the front, thanks to the addition of a small piece of metal in the tyre.

When doing it, I discovered a missing wheel bolt and a knackered thread in the hub, so I guess that will require a little work to put right.

Other than that, what can I report - oh, yes, if I used it daily instead of the smart (45-65mpg) or the XM 2.1TD (35-50mpg), I'd be bankrupted, while still using the oil reserves of the Fortes Field in a week or two.

Would I swap it for something else, like a Volvo estate? Not on your nelly!

Well that makes me feel better - same fuel consumption as a Xantia Activa then...
