MALHAM SAFARI - This Sunday, 3rd June

Right folks, Scooters' drive out around The Borders ain't now happening on 3rd June - anyone in or around the North of England still free on that day?

John_F suggested we might have a little gathering at Malham Safari, have a chin-wag and try out a crossbow (an actual crossbow, not the KTM variety). He's going to be there all weekend, in charge of the archery set-up.

If anyone's up for it, even just one or two others, we could do that and do a circular shite parade around some Dales roads.

Bring the family and leave them in the village to do the actual 'safari'?

Here's the Malham Safari web page on Malhamdale.com (clicky).

If the weather stays like this I'm likely to be busy well into the evening with the archery stuff so I doubt I'll get chance to join you for a drive out, and even if I could I'll only have the Discovery with me...but it would be good to see a few shiters in the flesh.

I'm just up there with my mates that run the archery so I'll no doubt be well up for a couple of beers in the evening though :D

Anyone up for it - very informal of course.

John will be coming up the hill to Chez K_Joe for a poke at 'Olga' - Come and watch if you've nowt better to do!

Here's the view of Malham and Malham Cove from our place. Rover-Samara seats are not a permanent patio feature.

Come and have a look for yourself.

Malham village is at the southern side of the Yorkshire Dales national park, BD23 4DA. (not my postcode btw)

As I said, I can't do the 3rd because I'm at work. This is why I wanted to do this on the 4th.

Sorry Jon, I appreciate most people will be busy and/or a long way away on the Sunday, but that's the only full day of the weekend (or indeed the whole month) that I have free, so we thought we'd put it out there...

However, if there's a bunch of people free on 4th and not the 3rd, I *might* be free for part of the Monday, but I have a big job to do at Halton Gill in the middle of the afternoon. Kinda screws the game up.

Saturday is off the cards, I have four holiday cottages to clean!

Yep – as Joe mentioned, I'll be there all weekend from Saturday until Monday with the archery / air rifles / crossbow shooting activity, it would be great to see some shiters at the event! If the weather stays like it's been it'll be ace.

We've provided archery at the Malham Safari for the last six or seven years but crossbows are new for this year, we had a trial event near Halifax yesterday with 30-40 people aged 5 to 65 to see what we could learn from it... everyone that took part loved it, but at Malham we'll be building a sandbag 'rampart' to act as a rest, some of the smaller ones had trouble with the weight of the crossbows. I also learned to not forget to put sun cream on my feet when wearing sandals :|

And of course we're all fully qualified & insured :D

BTW Olga is looking VERY nice Joe, was all that lovely paintwork hiding just below the coating of moss or has your brother been busy with the T-Cut?

Well, looks like just me and thee John!

Will is working all weekend, so we're unlikely to see him. He lives away, he just comes to see Olga in his free time. That photo ^ was just after the jet-washing session, which included a wipe down with bleach solution. She still needs a good T-cutting session, she'll respond well I'm sure. White is very forgiving in a photograph, especially when it's wet! He has made some more progress, and has promised he'll start a thread tonight, so I'll save more details on her for that one.

There are a lot of folks waiting for MOAR OLGA! GET ON IT, WILL!

On this weekend, I might just fire a pm off to Edd in case he missed this thread, he doesn't live too far away...

John, which part of Malham / which field are you based this weekend? I'll come and find you!

We're in the field that's immediately visible straight ahead when you drive down the hill into the village, it'll be full of archery targets... It's in front of the white building to the right of the Lada seats in your picture above.

We'll be there setting up from about 2pm tomorrow, until (probably) Tuesday. And chances are you'll find us in the Buck Inn in the evenings

Look forward to seeing you & Olga (and any other local shiters that fancy a day out) over the weekend then!

Ah yes, in front of Miresfield. Now I remember seeing you there in years gone by!

If Will is still here tomorrow afternoon you might see him too, after all...

Looking forward to seeing you anyhoo!

I pm'd Edd, but he's otherwise engaged attending to matters shite. We'll hook up some other time.

I stopped off this afternoon in Malham and found John and his mate Andy pitching a tent in a rutted field of cowpats and buttercups. How romantic.

We had a bit of a chinwag, but MrsKJ was waiting in the BX, so we made plans for Sunday involving crossbows, shite, barbeques and beer. In that order. It's gonna be PROPER BO, I tell thee!

Socks and sandals John, it's the future.

JESUS H CHRIST!

What day is it? I'm only just now emerging from the fog of Sunday night / Monday morning! I can honestly say I have never been so WANKERED in all my 30-odd years. My reputation in these parts? Shot to bits, or up three steps - depending on who you ask.

And it's all because of an evil, cloudy concoction known as "Scrumley", served from a plastic bag in a cardboard box.

W.T.actual.F is that stuff John?

I'm not up to a full write-up just yet, but I'll tell you this: Should you ever find yourself on the ales with John_F and his mates, you'd better not have anything in your diary for the following two or three days. A good night will be had by all, that's guaranteed. As is this: they will literally carry you back safely to your front door, even when you can't remember where you live.

Big thanks again to all the guys and girls, this weekend will live long in Malhamdale history.

Is it still the weekend?

Ahh, I think you mean "Scumble", Joe. We use the term to refer to any kind of scrumpy cider, inspired by the name of a reputedly evil brew in Terry Pratchett's Discworld.

The Scumble in question on Sunday night was Black Rat cider, 6.0% ABV. In fairness to all concerned we drank a SHITLOAD of it, along with an unknown quantity of ale in the Lister Arms, before we set off en masse with the box of Scumble to go see Janet's Foss waterfall in the pitch dark. And then when we got there we drank a shitload more :D

In fairness, the rest of us were also more or less wankered as well... I fell into at least one stream with the box of Scumble on my shoulder on the way back (it was still wet when we carried it up Kirkby Fell (?) the next night for the beacon lighting).

A great event though - much fun was had by all, nobody was seriously injured and Joe's wife appears to have forgiven him. And to top it all off, my mate Sarah now wants a Lada Niva after seeing Olga. WIN!

Perhaps it was a good idea that I didn't manage to take up the invite to join this drinking session (I got somehow sidetracked exhuming my Land Rover series 3 from the back of the workshop) and my bodies tolerance to any more than 1/2 pint of cider is low (the ensuing mayhem as a result would have been humorous to the onlookers however).

I can only imagine what this merry procession c/w soggy box of 'scumble' heading up Kirkby Fell must have looked like.........
