Cracked windscreens and the MOT

This tortuously appeared on Gumtree yesterday.

It's the type of thing I love - Big V6 but could easily pass for an LX TD if the badges were removed thanks to being raped of it's Si alloy wheels and lack of spoiler... plus tow bar!

CAR HAS CRACK IN WINDSCREEN BUT I'M TOLD IT WILL STILL PASS MOT AS IT DOESNT AFFECT DRIVERS VIEW

Now... take a look at the pic of the tax and MOT disc. That to me looks like one whopping crack. Does anyone know of the official MOT criteria on windscreen issues?

Normally, such a thing would see me dismiss the car, but unlike you lucky sods on the mainland, we have to take what we get when it comes to V6s

From memory to pass the MOT it has to be less than 10mm if in direct view of driver and less than 40mm if in swept area of wipers.

If its out of the area that the wipers cover, it doesn't matter - I think ... I'm sure someone will be along to correct me shortly ;)

Do you have to display a test certificate disc in Northern Irishland?

Thanks RedSparrow.

Yup! And there's a nice fine if you get caught without it.

Wonder why there isn't a similar system in the rest of the UK?

cracked windscreens dont seem to be a problem here, we have a $5 inspection sticker toyo%20screen.jpg?psid=1

Hmm, could be something to do with the fact that our system is government run. MOTs can only be carried out at dedicated testing stations who do nothing but inspect the car, (no repairs etc).

Ian - fancy MOTing a Mondeo V6 in Mississippi for me!??

As long as it has 4 wheels it should pass!

My Mondeo has a small crack down in the left corner where the tax disc is, I just move the wiper around on the splines for the MOT and then move it back after (the testers advice, along with fit a shorter wiper blade!)

Cracks are fine out of the swept zone, but damage in Zone A must be within a 10mm circle and other areas outside zone A ( Zone B in old talk ) no more than 40mm

Can't you just get fully comp on it and get the screen replaced on insurance?
