Stupid question but rather urgent so please forgive not being in the amnesty thread

I'm helping a mate sell a 2004 Focus 1.8 TDCi...

Car has cold starting issue - it starts but only after 3rd or 4th turn and glow plug light lasts about 1 second - I've checked glow plugs, power supply, relay, fuses all ok...checked Cam sensor - ok,checked engine temp sensor - ok.

Starter sounded a tad tierd so suspect that - today I put car in air, took stater motor out, stripped it and shre enough full of water, crud and calicates - so I scraped it all off and boiled the brush ring in a saucepan, reassembled and vaselined whole lot - next I removed thepositive battery cable - it's one of those

BATTERY>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>V>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>alternator jobs.

the whole charging andstarting systemis very exposed on these cars and there is a lot of exposed copper wire on the lead - piss poor quality by ford really, sure enough - green oxidisation on the copper wires, stripped the plastic off the cable and the WHOLE cable had oxidised.

Whilst the current is strong enough to crank the starter, it'snot giving the instant 750 RPM hit that the engine needs to fire a cylinder without flooding it and squitrting clouds of diesel out the exhaust - never a good thing when selling a car.

Also replaced the crappy thermostat housing with anold steel one...I have a question though...

does anyone know where the feck I can get hold of another cable ideally without going to Ford?

I'm usually quite good at locating alternator parts these days but even the Gods at Woods Auto don't know.

Sorry Scoots I cant help but I can tell you my focus has never started any better than this for the last 4 years despite glow plugs, battery, relays etc. I have given up hoping it will ever start any better!

Aye, I think it's a case of 'they all do that, sir', every Focus diesel I've come across has started lazily.

I'd be tempted to get some fat cable that the barryboys use on their car stereos and double up on the cabling each way... If you are near here you are welcome to pop over for a rummage?
