Just read about the Electric DeLoreal on BBC business, and wondered if this was true...

"The DMC-EV's batteries take 15 hours to charge using a 110-volt power outlet and store enough energy to travel up to 100 miles.

Cameron Wynne, head of purchasing at DeLorean and Stephen Wynne's son, is undaunted by the suggestion that the car's limited range would be a tough sell, particularly in the US.

"The American public, when they hear about an electric car, their first question is: 'Well, what do I do when I go on a road trip?'" he says.

"But how many times a year do you honestly go on a road trip when you use your own car? You typically rent a car, because you don't want to put mileage on your own car. :?

No,no,no ,yes. you're all missing the point. Do Americans really hire a car, so they don't have to use their own car

Having dealings with the American type peoples through my job, it would not surprise me. But then their roadtrips usually top 1,000 miles and it's generally less risk if you thrash a rental than if you thrash your own car doing it. Things like insurance are more forgiving if you have to claim in a rental than if you claim in your own car and it's just all around a more sensible proposition. I think some of it is the scale of the country and some of it is the mentality over there of cars being somewhat disposable unless it's your own.

Of course, they're not all like that, I've got some American car nutter friends who would rather take an ancient old boat or hot rod for a drive than some modern plastic rental unit, but they do seem to be in an increasing minority now.
