smoking webasto heater

Yesterday the wifes MPV started belching white smoke from the front wheelarch.

I'm pretty sure that it's the webasto diesel heater which was factory fit on an 806.

I have unplugged the electrical connector for now.

I'm guessing that it has become starved of a clean air supply hence the smoke but I don't know how they work or if there is some replaceable air filter on it.

Any ideas?

White smoke is likely to be vapourised diesel rather than incomplete combustion of diesel - but I'm not sure!

a bit of googling suggests that there is a glowplug inside the unit which has probably blown

I've never heard of this before, sounds nice and safe whatever it is

I'd imagine the concept's similar to the petrol heaters fitted to many Tatras and suchlike!

Inline fuel pre-ignitor.

The Rover 75 has one to heat the coolant, as the engine's so thermally efficient that you'd get frostbite rather than any heat from the heater in winter.

/\ My uncle's 75 Conny SE CDTi has a Webasto fuel burning heater. Great job.

The fix for Omega owners who complained about it was to unplug it and tape the connection over. Supposed to assist fast warm up. VW actually deleted/modified (can't remember which..) them from Tourans for the UK market as they caused more problems from unaware owners then they 'cured'. Left a fault code present but no warning lamp....

to be fair the car is 12 years old and has over 200,000 miles on it

Never heard of them but quite impressive.
