Ford Sierra 2.0 GLX (1992)

Here is a once in a life time (probably) opportunity to experience life as a travelling photo-copier sales man circa 1992, with this Ford Sierra 2.0 GLX.

Packed into its sleek, stylish and bang up to date bodywork is a twin cam, carburettor fed engine of approximately 120BHP which is smooth, quiet and gets up to motorway speeds effortlessly, whilst returning roughly 35mpg on a mixed cycle of A-roads and town work. Many more on the motorway.

The comfortable interior has seat belts all round, a premium cassette and FM radio sound system and front electric windows. The front seats are very supportive and both have adjustable lumbar support, which I can confirm is excellent as I have been using it as my daily driver for the past few months. Also, everything works, the windows go down and up with no judders or jolts, the blowers and heated rear screen get up to temperature smartly and clear the screens within seconds, the radio is crisp and the digital clock tells the right time. It has a very nearly new set of tailored floor mats which fit very well. All the gauges work, but the speedo drive does rattle slightly at speeds below 20MPH.

The bodywork itself it wearing its 88,000 miles well. It is by no means perfect and has its fair share of scratches and some odd very small patches of surface rust but is overall much more solid than a Sierra has any right to be. It could not be more standard, all the wheel trims are present and correct and the radio is the original Ford option. Possibly my favourite feature of this car is the headlamp wash wipe system which works perfectly. The boot is mahoosive, easily big enough for a couple of bodies and the hatchback is held open by the struts no problem.

Obviously being a Ford of 20 years old it isn't all peaches and kittens: there are 2 immediately noticeable dents, one in the driver front wing that has caused some rust on that wheel arch and one on the leading edge of the boot lid. There is also more pronounced rust on the drivers rear arch which could do with being rectified in the not too distant future. There are a couple of patches on the lower part of the sills. There is also a crack lower part of the rear bumper, which I have pushed back into place and is almost un-noticable but could be glued back in place for an almost seamless repair. There are also scratches and some scrapes on it; the worst of which by a long way is on the passenger door mirror.

Engine wise, I will admit that it let me down very soon after I got it when the head gasket let go. When I pulled the head off it still had the original fibrous gasket in place which are notorious for problems, this has been replaced with an after market steel reinforced gasket that has worked beautifully. When this was done, I used new head bolts and a new timing chain tensioner, so the job was done properly. The timing chain was not changed, although it should have at-least another 30,000 miles of life in it. Second gear is a little stiff from cold but after about two minutes of driving it is perfect. The oil, filter and coolant

There is some brake judder, I assume that one of the front brake discs are warped but it does not affect the breaking performance, it is just a little irritating. These will probably need to be changed for the MOT in October. Despite it being rear wheel drive the tyres have good tread.

Insurance is surprisingly cheap as well. At 19, I am paying significantly less on insuring this than many of my friends are spending on crummy little French hatchbacks, but as it is a 2.0, tax is in the more expensive bracket.

If I am honest I am selling mostly because I am bored of it. I enjoy having the power under my foot but for a long commute along twisting A roads with a town at either end, a small front wheel drive car is just more fun in that particular situation. Although selling it is a completely illogical idea, as this is fast, comfortable, economical, and easy to drive day to day. Car will be in daily use before it is sold so mileage will go up a bit.

Priced to sell at £670 before it goes on eBay (once I have actually bought a new car). So what are you waiting for?

Buy my Sierra

That is one beautiful car in such a good condition. Nice to see a set of tailored mats. Rare to see in a Sierra.

I'd love to have that off you, but at the moment I'm doing a rendition of an late 80s company director:

That really does look lovely, Lord S. Those wheels are perfect on it.

Good luck on the Sierra Sale, Phil. Never driven a DOHC before, must have a play at some time. The GLX wheeltrims were great. I remember when that facelift happenned, I was 10 and I couldn't believe that ford were putting SMOKED TAILLIGHTS!!!! on cars, AS STANDARD!!! Smoked taillights gave me a hard-on, when I was ten. Strange days.

You like the smoked rear lights? Well it's your lucky day because this one comes with a spare pair,so you could retro fit them to your Rover 800 and then have 2 mighty fine automobiles with smoked rear lights. Every mans dream.

Tragically, I have to maintain my position as the Most Disappointing Member of this fine forum and pass on further vehicles for The Time Being / The Rest Of My Life (delete as appropriate). I just hope it doesn't get snaffled by the Kit Car brigade for that MTX75 gearbox.

Don't sell it. You will regret it. You said it yourself in your last few paragraphs. An unmolested glx is a rare car which as you say stands out from the crowd has character and has some decent performance.

Trust me you will regret it as finding another daily like that...one you can rely on and is mechanically sorted won't be esdy

That's a lovely, honest and original example of a Sierra. I have many happy memories of these.

There aren't many GLX models left and the 2.0 never sold in high numbers either. Some may laugh, but you do have a rare old beast, there. Even more so to find a nice, original and unmolested example including original wheel trims and radio/cassette. Glad to see the cassette slots still being used for what they were designed for too! It should have another cassette tray under the armrest too. This in itself can be lifted out though and many got nicked... (sorry to the owner of Sierra H532 JJL - we needed it before selling it on...! Honest...!)

Tasman Blue with Mirage Grey velour - nice combination mode>.

If you really have to sell, then fair enough. Sadly, all too many people out there still don't appreciate Fords of this era (even though they're now at the 20 year mark) and I fear it's next owner may likely be it's last. Personally if I had the chance, I'd keep it, use sparingly and dry store it for another five years or so before punting it on.

The cassette tray in the arm rest is still there, and holding my less used cassettes.

I just thought i would point out that the sunroof slides backwards and forwards and does not leak, the central locking also works exactly as it should, and the velour is still velour-tastic.

I want rid because I like it but not enough to want to drive it everyday, its different but not different enough for me, and although the power almost makes up for it, it doesn't quite manage it.

fond memories of my 2.0LX - suprisingly pokey those carb twinks, could smoke the rear tyres pulling away from (damp) junctions without even trying!

Still for sale, and I need it gone as the new car is on the way this week.

Grab it before it ends up in the ebay tat thread at the end of the week.
