That's a great buy for 500 notes!

Admittedly, I'd be itching to get rid of the extras, but like you say, it's all personal taste. Can't remember the last time I saw one!

All of a sudden, it's 1995 again!

I wish it was! I agree with all the comments here about the mid 90's affect this car is having as the Ford Orion really was the car to have then, it was a sort of 'well off' boy racers car as it was bigger and had class it said hey look I can afford an Orion whilst the others can only afford an Escort or Nova. I was 17 turning 18 in 1997 my mate who was the same age had an A reg Orion 1.6 GL in white with blue seats I remember him driving all us boys to places in it and picking up girls, his radio didn't work and one of the boys ripped a radio out of a Renault Traffic that was abandoned in a church car park and we fitted that, the station of choice then was Long Wave Radio Atlantic 252 and we were listening to things like Sash, Suede, Seahorses, Rosie Gaines and Ultra Nate. We had proper hot summers back then too, its amazing how little interest the Orion now has and its a shame its surviving numbers seem so low I havent seen one for ages.

I'm beginning to get quite nostalgic for my own 'inbetweener' period, when Fords of the mid 1980s were still around in healthy numbers, were in the main still in good condition, could be bought for very little and could be easily/cheaply upgraded with scrapyard bits. My dream car back then was the Cortina 80 - I would have loved to have had a Crusader as my first car in 1995, but I had to settle for a Fiesta 1.1, due to insurance costs. Now I'm at a point where I can afford to buy, run and insure a Cortina, they have all been scrapped or banger raced

They are still out there, but all the cheap ones are being hoovered up for the all cortina banger race at swaffham in the summer. Theres 175 registered for it already. Winds me up, but what can you do.

Having said that with a bit of hunting you can still but a really tidy mk5 uder the 800 quid mark.

I remember back in 96 looking for my first car and being really keen on a Cortina as well, but the only ones I could find were very tired or rotten, and being that I was 17 I was too impatient to keep searching, so bought a mk2 cavalier instead!

Get on Buysellcortina, you'll soon find something decent shy of a grand. Mine was £400 though I'm sure more solid examples shall be raced at that Swaffham meet. Now's the time to pick one up as they'll surely soon be even rarer and more pricey the way things are going with racing and OMGOSFGR84DRIFTIN SCENETAXARAMA

Been using the Orion every day since I bought it.. Clocked up about 1500 miles in it trouble free.. Have now been offered a weber 32/34 plus the manifold and a 5 speed manual box - worth making the swap from the VV? I think I'm inclined to take the 5 speed set up in case the auto box goes bang, but as to the carb.. Will it make much difference to the car ? I've had nothing but hassle from VVs before but as its currently running well I'm a bit reluctant to swap it out if it won't make much odds.. Thoughts?

I've had VV carbs on 2 1.6 CVH Escorts with no problems. My B plate Ghia doesn't get used much and still starts on choke fine with the choke switching itself off as it should. Like most things in life you can get good and bad of everything.

Anyone fancy this Orion? I've just bought a 52 plate mondeo tdci to save a bit of cash on the fuel since im doing ridiculous mileage so need to recoup some cash

Its a tidy car! One rusty bit inside the drivers wheelarch but apart from that its all ok and runs well. A bit unhappy when you first start it as I disconnected the choke since it kept sticking on, and the exhaust baffles rattle a bit

Just put a fresh 6month tax in the window and its got MOT til september. Shiters price only : £650 bottom line, which is pretty much what it owes me. I'll be wanging it on ebay at a buy it now probably of about 800 in the next few days.

Ive done 6000 miles in it in the last 2 months with no hassle up and down between aberdeen and edinburgh. Its in Fife at the mo.
