Do you like a Metrocab?

There's a cabby down my street with one still at work... it's the only car that out does the PSNI's landys for sheer engine noise that you can hear from miles away.

They do look quite nice but I definitely prefer the proper "london cabs".

Am I correct in thinking that they were built by Reliant latterly, after MCW went out of business?

Today I have been at the museum's new site and have been sorting out all the exhibits that were stored in the back of the Metrocab (posters and signs, not buses ) . First a picture of the back, confirming the Ford engine:

The display board gives the rather convoluted history of the various manufacturers. It appears that production went on until 2006

The latest I've seen was an 06-plate but to be honest I thought it'd just been lying about for bloody ages. The lat ones weren't as handsome as the early ones. If handsome is the right word... ?

I went in one once and it was really awful compared to an old Taxi. The engine was much noisier, it was basic inside and the driver moaned about it. It always made me wonder why anyone saw it fit as a replacement.

Mine has a "banana" engine so slightly more refined than the early DI's, but it's not the quietest vehicle in the world - would imagine an old FX4 with the LR diesel would be worse, but the later 2.7 Nissan engine was more refined than the DI in the Metrocab. Late Metrocabs apparently got a Toyota engine though.
