MrDuke Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 Can someone just confirm for me, that the Isuzu 1.7TD in the Astra G is more-or-less the same as in the mk3 Cavalier? I know that the latter is OK with veg oil, so I'm hoping I can chuck it in mine with no issues. Have a camper for your troubles:
Lacquer Peel Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 No, I don't think so. The Isuzu TD was discontinued around 1996.It's a GM TD of similar cubic capacity, which should be OK on veg oil as it ticks the boxes - Bosch injection pump and indirect injection. If it's a DTi or CDTi just put pump diesel in it.
Cavcraft Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Hopefully Albert will see this and comment as he works at a Vauxhall dealer. From my limited knowledge most later ones were GM units, but I have heard of some being Isuzu.
red5 Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 If it's an early one you might be able too, although some of the Bosch pumps (generally the 'best' for veg) on those needed seal replacing for veg use. GM basically bought the engine in the late 90's/early 2000's (iirc). Used a variaition of it up until Astra H I think. Anyways, check your engine code - that'll help.
wuvvum Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Or check the engine capacity on the logbook - Isuzu engine was 1686cc if memory serves, GM unit was more or less bang on 1700.
MrDuke Posted February 18, 2012 Author Posted February 18, 2012 Apparently, teh internet seems to think it is an Isuzu, being a DTi 'Sportive' - also, the hoses and cables have 'Isuzu' printed on them. I wish I knew where my logbook was so I could check the cc I would just check the fuel pump type, but it's completely hidden by the exhaust manifold. Why do they design engine bays like chinese puzzle boxes these days?Tbh I'll probably just keep lobbing new oil in along with the diesel anyway; if it starts doing bad things I can get rid of it and buy another 405 instead
lancashireclamper Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 You can check the cc by putting the reg number into the DVLA web pagehttps://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPo ... ution=e1s2 Would think its a 1686 by the sound of it, I had an L reg Astra estate 1700D and was told by the local GM delaer it was one of the last of the vauxhall lumps
Cavcraft Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 There was a right weird selection of diesel engines in the Astras. The (first) 1700s were Vauxhall and were brilliant things but a bit slow. Then came Isuzu n/a and turbo and GM 'slow blow' 1.7 turbos, which were a bit shit, and some Mk4s had either Isuzu or GM lumps.
Lacquer Peel Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 I haven't heard of the Isuzu DTi engine running on vegetable oil, biomotors suggests a '2 tank kit' which means it's not good for running on veg out of the box.I approve of buying the best 405 you can find instead.
red5 Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Or a Polo 1.9 N/a which ran...runs fine on it 75/25...
baldrickthecunning Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Even the original Isuzu 1.7 TD needs filter and heating mods to make it run smoothly on veg. The GM or any direct injection engine will require more elaborate setups.
