What car mags do you buy/rate these days?

I buy Practically Bra$$ic magazine most months, whereupon I spend hours pouring over the classified ads looking at the Flame Red ADO16 for just shy of £5Large and dreaming what I would buy if I dint have 4 kids haemoraging cash out of my wallet like water pouring out of the plughole of my bath.

Advice for people wishing to live the shite dream

1) Dont get married unless to a fellow shitter

2) Dont have kids

I subscribe to Classic Car Weekly....i think it only works out about a quid and a bit for an issue. However I'm sure it didn't feature as many 'supercars' as it does now....the bread and butter stuff seems to get edged out. I didn't even bother reading last weeks article on the Ferrari Testa-tosser.

I'll always flick through stuff in the Supermarket and will buy summat if there's an interesting report, but at over £4 a shot they're a bit pricey now aint they.

I much prefer reading old Motor or Autocar mags from the 70s and 80s, especially when partaking of a dump. Yesterday I was reading a Road Test on the Renault 14 from 1977 and also learned that 1970s TV actress Hannah Gordons first car was a Triumph Herald. I like stuff like that.

Car Mechanics, Practical Classics and Classics Monthly, plus the Volvo Owners Club magazine, Volvo Driver :)

None, most of them are full of drivel/adverts. But then most modern cars are utter drivel. This and Honest John in the Saturday Torygraph are the only regular motoring reads. CAR/Supercar&Classics was my preferred glossy back in the late 80s and early 90s.

The voice of reason!

Problem is there are very few female shitters and Louise is spoken for -

constant 'negociation' with SWMBO seems the best bet but it doesn't help if the cash is used for unimportant things like kids clothes/food etc...

I've got into the habit of telling her whenever a friend either buys a new car or gets one repaired/serviced and reminding her of the cash we are saving driving shitters! - Usually works!

I subscribe to Practical Classics, and agree that it's been getting better of late. Along with Motor Sport magazine, which has decent coverage of new car releases in it these days - meaning I don't feel the need to buy any 'new car' magazines. They still fall into Porsche's trap of reviewing every slightly altered 911 as if it's an important new model though - just like all the other magazines do.

I also subscribe to C&SC, but only for Buckley's writing if I'm honest. His recent 'barge' feature being particularly good.

Oh, and I subscribe to Car Mechanics too. Some of it still baffles me, but I think it's teaching me a lot.

The house is thus covered in car magazines, and my wife is seriously dis-chuffed about it.

I bet she won't let you say a dickybird about her fashion mags though! Their role in life seems to be that of "wet blanket" over everything a man likes to do.
