Changing to a cheaper tax bracket.

Has anyone done this? I have a spare 1500 engine which I could stick in my Maxi and put it in the "cheap" tax bracket. Do I simply fill out the V5 with the new engine number and send it off or will it need to be inspected?

Should be alright. I've lobbed another engine in one of my Datsuns and just filled in the engine number, no questions asked. OK it was same capacity but it shouldn't raise any eyebrows I'd have thought.

We are talking about the DVLA here.

Expect to have to take an "engineer"s report and a million pounds to your nearest DVLA office, which is probably a hundred miles away.

And wait for a month.

And then get your V5 back and discover that the CC is still the same but the colour is now 1500.

And then get a summons for not sorning the other 1750 Maxi which has the same reg as your new 1500 one.

Just a thought....

Change to engine and cylinder capacity (engine size)

DVLA will need written evidence of any changes to engine number and cylinder capacity (cc). Written evidence can be:

•a receipt for the replacement engine

•written evidence from the manufacturer

•an inspection report provided for insurance purposes

•written confirmation on headed paper from a garage if the change in engine size took place before you bought the vehicle

Not many years ago I converted a 150cc MZ to 125cc to meet the learner criteria. Already having a 125 motor I got my sister to write a brief invoice on a bit of note paper along the lines of 'MZ 125 engine with engine number xxxxxxxx sold as seen to Mr J xxxxx for £30'. Then sent it to DVLA with a nice covering letter informing them of the engine change. An amended V5C followed with no further communication.

Cheers for the info, that link was very interesting. It looks pretty straightforward! Just need a garage to write up a letter along the lines of "supply and fit 1500cc engine number ******** to vehicle ******" e.t.c. and the DOOVLA should be ok! I'm sure that I remember reading somewhere that if you end up paying less tax you need to have the car inspected at a DVLA garage. Maybe not. Only one way to find out I suppose!

I dread to think if the DVLA have been notified to the changes on my repowered Mk2 National... on the plus side, I find going to the local DVLA office and changing the taxation bracket from "PSV" to "PLG" means a saving of about £130 a year :D
