Any recommendations for a good painter in the North East?

I have a Lotus Eclat that needs a total sprayjob, been rubbed down an 95% prepped. The guy I would like to do the job (seen examples of his work at c. £1500 bloody gorgeous) is so cheap he's mega busy.

That said I'm drawing dole at the moment so even bargain £1500 now seems aspirational. Does anyone know someone who can do a good job for that or preferably less within an hour or so of Durham? Car was metallic but looking for plain old white as a colour - does that make it easier?

Feel free to answer by PM if your recommended chappy is doing a bit of cash on the side, nudge wink....

If he is busy and you are good at prepping why not suggest a trade off - you prep some cars for him in return for him spraying the Lotus.

All the good people are always busy, so if someone can do it right away, worry.

I'm afraid I can't recommend anyone in the north east. However, if you were willing/able to go further afield then these guys are worth considering for a slow but very thorough and good value job. They've got my Sceptre 3 in for a respray at the moment and I've been impressed throughout my dealings with them. Slow though, because it's just two blokes (a father and son) and they're v busy too.

This guy's done a couple of jobs for me, and I've been well pleased with the standard of work and the price*:

He has a locked compound too, if you need to leave the car with him for a while.

The place would be about two hours from Durham, I'd guess.

As an added bonus he's usually got some old shite knocking about the premises - last time I was there he had a Dolomite, a Mini Marcos and a load of old Metros in.

*This was for panels mind, not a full respray.

i started looking around for a good GRP capable sprayer in the summer in the durham area, i asked people with grp cars at various local meets and no one could (or would) recommend anyone, but i heard a lot of horror stories. It seems a lot of painters are afraid of doing GRP paint jobs, because of the high proportion that go tits up, so they overcharge, in case of problems with the paint afterwards

This guy is very good, slightly further than an hour away he is in Halifax.

He is a Fibre Glass Specialist and concentrates on Lotus and Renault Alpine's. As it happens he has recently resprayed my crash damaged A610 and the finish is superb.

Thanks for the responses dudes. Some excellent workmanship there. I take on board what you say about waiting for someone good, think I need to start concentrating on getting a job and earning some £££ to do it justice rather than scrimping. Car chould be roadworthy and MOT'able even without paint so can travel for an attractive job.

Sorry, not yet. Bought for a song as a parts car for another resto project (Elite) but on inspection found to be 10 times better in just about every respect. Could make a decent profit by breaking, and still donate many bits for the Elite, but I'm a soft sucker for homeless puppies like this (like most on this forum I reckon). It's mint everywhere but the paintwork, even the spare wheel was unused! Only needed a refurb to the brakes system and carbs (thanks Steve) to run under it's own steam. Original colour is ice green metallic, but been looking at the undercoat so long I now fancy white. Will make a nice summer sports car.
