Insurers and glass cover

My daily driver mondeo got a chip in the windscreen last week, it looks like it might possibly be an MOT failure due to it's position.

I was wary of going through my insurance, I simply did'nt trust them to get any repairs done without whacking me at renewal time.

I contacted my insurer, and enquired as to wether or not my repair would constitute a claim, and wether or not my premium would go up.

I was told that it SHOULD'NT count as a claim, however a claim for a new screen would be factored in when it was time for renewal.

So there you go, be very wary of going through your insurer as it would appear that even glass damage is being constituted as an "incident".

BTW, does anybody know of any glass repairers that can repair a couple of chips for less than the £72.50 + VAT per chip quoted by autoglass in the Widnes / Warrington area?

what a response. "It shouldn't affect it", but it just might do!

If I were you, I'd write an e-mail demanding written clarification. You really cannot trust insurers these days (cue 15 pages of angry responses about how insurers are quite alright really :P ), and there's always a chance that the answer will be a favourable one...

some insurers are now charging a £25 excess for chip repairs FYI.

The idea of free chip repairs was to save them from having to pay for a whole new screen when the crack spreads across the glass. Insurers seem to have forgotten what is in their own best interests. Prats.

my insurance company told me if the chip is the size of a 5p coin then the repair is free and not classed as a claim

The wording in my car insurance..

The excess and loss of claim free discount do not apply to a claim that is solely for accidental damage to

windscreen windows sunroofs or driving lights of the car.

All glass repairs and replacement are FREE . I did not realise that lights were covered until I read this just now !

What a pity you don't live here.
