scaryoldcortina Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 Can anyone explain purchase tax? It doesn't seem to make any sense! For example, most of the items in the catalogue don't carry any tax - the only accessory with PT added is the ash tray. Also, the 240v mock-carriage lamps aren't taxed but the bulbs are, Oil heaters are, but the wicks are not and although mirrors are not taxed, replacement glass for mirrors is. I mean WTF?
autofive Posted November 17, 2011 Author Posted November 17, 2011 i know that items classed as luxuries were taxed at a higher rate, and essentials (today its childrens clothes, books and non-luxury foods) are without tax.
Conrad D. Conelrad Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 Can anyone explain purchase tax? It doesn't seem to make any sense! Also, the 240v mock-carriage lamps aren't taxed but the bulbs are, Oil heaters are, but the wicks are not and although mirrors are not taxed, replacement glass for mirrors is. I mean WTF? Purchase tax was only applied to 'luxury items'. Naturally, it was a mess. This website has some examples of its quirks: Example: 1959. Set aside the ongoing questions in the House on levying Purchase Tax in the first place on gramophone records (more on this later), how about the fact an LP Record Carrying Case, that is one that included covers for the discs and /or Index Cards, carried the same amount of Tax as a record (50%), yet a carrying case of similar design but without the enclosed aforementioned had the rate of 25%. Furthermore, the then trendy freestanding Record Rack also carried a 50% duty, whereas wooden cabinets that housed records had just 5% Tax slapped on them, as were termed as furniture! And we know that all types of furniture are a necessity! If you find this bizarre, a Wireless (Radio if you prefer) had a combination of two rates of Tax. That is, the 5% being for the cabinet (yes, furniture of course!), and the internal workings at 50% - which was double the rate for electrical instruments, including amplifiers.. err.
scaryoldcortina Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 Oh, so light bulbs are a luxury? [/yorkshire]
TimothyClaypole Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 Those oil heaters look a good laugh to have in the house.
barefoot Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 I had an unused set of © those 12 inch wheel trims for a Viva in the garage for years.& threw them away about a week before I discovered this website.
