Quandry time again.

I think your value of the Jag is a shade high.

Funnily enough, I think the valuation of the Jag is a bit low if anything. After using it to go to the NEC today I'm seriously considering spending whatever it needs to get it immaculate again and bolting a towbar onto it.

Mint XJR-6s still fetch £4k and above. It's the dog rough ones that are in the bargain basement. Mine has had everything mechanical done, and as anyone who's been in it will know it's definately not a rough one. Just needs a few hundred quids worth of cosmetics and a couple of hundred quid chucking at the rear suspension. Then it's back to being utterly mint.

Pete, when I read this a couple of days ago I thought your valuation on the Jag was a bit low as well. There are XJR6s at this money of course – some a bit cheaper too, but having seen a couple of them they can be real dogs.

Bog standard X300s are properly cheap motors like most XJ40s, but the XJR is still sought after if it has a good bit of life left in it and is worth significantly more as a consequence; I agree a good one is at least £4k.

The XJR attracts abuse and there are some really shagged ones out there – complete horrors of cars. They’re basically an XJ40 and build on that car’s strengths but share many of its weaknesses – particularly for rust, despite what many say. If yours only has rusty arches (all 94 X300s seem to) then I’d class it as a good one. Some have serious rot on the underside and in the bulkhead and boot floor and in the front and rear pillars. I know a guy who bought a superficially decent one after a brief and intoxicating drive earlier in the year (for about £1250 IIRC) and found the underside was as rotten as a pear to the extent he had to break it at a big loss.

158K may seem a fair bit, but the X300 is well known for its ability to shrug off the miles if it is maintained properly – which yours has. Most XJRs have done at least this. They seem to cover a much higher average mileage than other versions of the X300. I don’t think it will put a punter off too much since all the other cars he looks at are likely to have done at least this and could feel very worn in comparison. Yours also benefits from being a decent colour. Some X300s came in rather challenging colours which are hard to love.

I seem to remember you say your headliner is doing the usual Jag droop. What colour is it? I bought some grey cloth for mine which isn’t quite the right colour of grey so might not use it. If I don’t need it, would you like it?

Personally I would keep the Jag, freshen it up and add a tow bar. I can’t think of a single Japanese car I’d rather have than your XJR the sensible side of a Mazda Cosmos or Toyota 2000GT.

Have you had the 604’s sides painted by the guy next to Dave and Gray’s place? Is he good?

Mine's got the oatmeal interior so the headlining matches. To be honest, it's not that bad. Admittedly Mr. Staple Gun has visited just to keep it in place but it's easily saveable. No marks, stretches or grubby bits.

The 604 is being painted by another chap Dave'n'Gray know. I'll let you know what it's like when it returns.

Bulkhead, boot floor, wings, doors, pillars, inner wings etc are all mint on mine. The floor does have a bit of surface rust but nothing remotely serious. If I keep it I'll get the floor back to bare metal, treated and undersealed properly.

When is yours going for it's remedial work?

That's a shame, it's have been a nice free upgrade - well almost free because the glue is quite pricy, I suppose. :) A grey headliner in an oatmeal car would look pretty horrible I'd say, but strangely, an oatmeal headliner would probably look OK in a car with a grey interior.

If all these parts are good on your '300, then I'd say its a lot better than average. I reckon most people underestimate the way the X300 rusts.

Hopefully, work will start on mine in 2 weeks! I'd be very helpful for me to know how the paint goes and who did the work - so thanks for that, I appreciate it!

I can assure all and sundry there's fuck all wrong with Pete-M's Jag. Other than some slightly blebby rear arches.

BRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE (speedo says 140).

It's had a new transfer box and from the date it was replaced should have the upgraded collar fitted, too. Props can be rebuilt for under £200 and are a doddle to fit.

Switchable maps from 265bhp to 310bhp

I am looking for pretty much exactly what you are looking for but on a tighter budget or I would be buying the V70R I linked you to

For what it's worth, the dog guard, divider, gate and boot mat would sell for £200 and if you are happy to stay on one map the BSR PPC device should also sell for upwards of £200. If you don't need the load cover, that's another £100. If you don't need 7 seats, that can be easily removed and sell for £150 plus. Lowers the spec of the car but it gets you £650 back. It's already fitted with a detachable tow bar

It's damn rare in that colour, spec and age. It will always be desirable and very difficult to ever lose money on. Worst case scenario, it dies and you can break it and get in the region of £3000 in parts.

I've picked up a 2001 9-5 Aero estate in manual with a knackered engine for £260 and sourced another engine for £300 so although cost a lot less, it's a weekend lost.

The thing is with Jags is that people looking for a "good XJR" because they know what "good" means will be prepared to pay strong money. Those who don't know and just fancy one will expect low prices and end up with a money-pit. The ratio is about 5:95, so to get good money one has to sift through the 95% who reckon it's worth £995.

Sort the arches and make sure it is clonk free at the back and front as no matter how perfect it is everywhere else, these things will excite the £995 brigade.

The arches will be cut out and replaced, and done properly. It doesn't actually clunk at all, but I can feel that the a-frame bushes aren't absolutely tip top and checking 'em out confirms a small amount of play in the offside one. Most people would never notice them but they wind me up. The rear shocks will be replaced as soon as I can find some good secondhand Bilstein XJR ones to replace them. New ones are mental money, and Bilsteins do tend to last for bloody ages so it wouldn't be surprising if they're the originals under there.

Find a Chrysler 300T or an E-Class estate in a breakers, take the Jag in the garage, kick the back window out, relocate the petrol tank in the spare wheel recess, cut the rear scuttle out & the horizontal surface off the boot lid, weld the 300T/E-Class roof & top 1/2 of the tailgate to the Jag & bad-ah-bing! Problem solved!

I just thought, you could get an X-Type V6 4x4 estate & bung a 100bhp nitrous kit in, if you want the easy route.

Posted

I'd have an X-type 3.0 Estate, but they're the only ones to have* so hard to find in the right spec.

*unless you're a diesel apologist who somehow things mpgs are more satisfying than refinement and poke.

The only thing is, I`ve heard the 4x4`s have some, possible, inherent weaknesses, so if you enjoy `spirited` driving, & I think you do, then you may break some expensive & awkward to get to things....

Audi RS2 then? (is that Porsche modified Avant thing an RS2 or 3... or 4?!)

Oh, & something else, get a mint Carlton estate with high miles, then get a crash damaged Lotus Carlton with low miles, then bung the running gear in the estate... maybe stick a Senator front end on too...

Maybe I`m forcing some of my warped idea`s on you.. sorry 8)

The temptation to build a Cossie powered Granny Mk2 Ghia X Estate has been overwhelming for years.
