Trying to find a part that may not exist!

Hello!

I spent some of this afternoon working on an electric fan conversion for my Volvo 240. Basically iv'e used a Volvo V90 fan and a cut down shroud and mounted it to a spare 240 radiator to make sure everything fits OK. Pretty pleased so far, it looks factory!

The fan is a 2 speed affair and is controlled by a relay pack. What I need to complete the set up is a temperature switch for the radiator with 3 prongs, one earth one low temp and one high temp, for the two speeds on the fan. With me so far? Good!

There's a blanking plug on the radiator in one of the end tanks for a temperature switch, its a push fit, measuring 16mm.

So basically i'm after a 3 pronged thermostat switch, push fit into a radiator end tank measuring and 16mm across! I've looked about but they just don't seem to exist. There are a few threaded ones, but that I can't use one of those.

Any ideas??

IIRC Rover used push fit temp switches on the K Series wedge shape 200s, 400s, and Metros. I might be completely wrong though.

Just taken a peep on EuroCarParts site.... 2 terminals, but push in!

Late Escorts have a fan switch mounted in the top hose , you could get one of these ans cut n shut your top hose to incorporate it . some of the switches have 4 pins 2 lives and 2 outputs to fans

Loads of stuff has two speed fans. Even the Jensen Interceptor had 'em, so there'll be a Lucas or Bosch bit that'll do it.

I think the Scorpio has the switch you're looking for.

There are plenty of aftermarket options here..there is a generic one that essentially has a long sensor wire which you feed in through the top hose joint with the radiator..kenlowe sell them as part of their retro fit fan solution to classics. Essentially the switch is just two bi metallic strips which bend at different temperatures closing the circuit. Not too hard to bodge one together using such a sensor...that is if you can't find a 2 speed wire sensor switch.

You could always mount the 940 radiator in the 240... not exactly a space challenge given the engine bay in a 240 is the size of a swimming pool. BTW I have never had a 240 overheat on me even with a failed fan.

I think a 940 rad is a straight swap, its larger but there are still mounting points for it to go on. The 240s existing rad is brand new so i'm a bit reluctant to get a new one. The fan shroud has been chopped up to fit now, anyway.

I have seen the kenlowe adjustable thermostat jobbies. They look quite good! The switch that fits in the rad works by earthing the wire from the relay at a set temperature, i'm not sure how the kenlowe one works but it may not be a straight forward replacement for a radiator temp switch.

Ok, iv'e bitten the bullet and bought one of these..

Apparently loads of BMW models of scrapyard age have the right two speed fan switch that will fit it. It will take a few days to arrive, plus I wont beable to get a fan switch until next weekend so that all gives me time to mess about with the wiring and get it all soldered up before I fit it.
