Finding vehicle details from just the reg number?

Is this possible for joe public? This is just me being a curious nosey bugger really but there's a vehicle I know that apparently has an incorrect reg number, word is that the number is correct but the age letter has been changed in a vain attempt to make it look younger so it's on par with a rival's similar vehicle. I looked at the tax disc & indeed this appears to be the case as it shows an older letter! The thing is very rarely on the road & in the back of beyond so I suppose that's why he's got away with it.

I'm thinking there's a fair chance the number displayed will belong to a real vehicle & I'm wondering what!!

As whe're talking about things that were new in the early 90s there's a fair chance whatever it was has been scrapped but there's a load of cars that are long since crushed still on the DVLA computer.

I did have a quick google & found plenty sites but they all seem to charge a fee. The only free on seemed to be mycarcheck & that atleast couldn't find it, mabye it doesnt exist.

Didn't realise you could do that on the RAC one, anyway it can't find anything so it'll either be scrapped & gone or it was never issued. Nevermind it'd have been interesting, local plate too!

The other way to get a little more information requires an eBay account - go to Sell, then click on 'Sell a car or motorcycle'. You'll be prompted to enter the vehicle registration, and that should prepopulate a load of information from DVLA including date of first registration, colour and number of previous owners. No charge, as you can just log out at that point.

There used to be a good free one that showed the date of the last change of registered keeper, that I thought was quite useful (to find out if someone was getting shot of the car quick), but I can't find it any more.

Yes I know but it provides quite a lot of detail from the reg no entered and only takes 30 seconds to do,

Slightly off topic last week I flogged my old Toyota to them and, shock horror it was a piece of piss!!

Described car honestly, made appointment to take it, thought, they'll offer me a fraction of the online quote and I'll tell them to Fornicate with a close relative and drive home, no, bloke was waiting in the car park, looked my old heap over, agreed with everything I'd said about it, gave me a form to cash the tax in with, and off we went to his office, deal done, a joint whinge about fuel prices, hence me going from a 2.0 to a 1.3 and apparently he's just gpt rid of an n reg merc for a citroen c4 for the same reason, seemed a top fella and job done!

(He did go on to say that an hour before me a bloke turned up with a Vectra that he said had no damage and 65.000 miles, it actualy had 2 large dents and 80.000 miles but didn't see how that would affect its value, mr webuyanycar then asked him if he'd feel that way if he was buying rather than selling)

End result I wandered out of the car park, bemused, almost impressed and with no idea whatsoever how I'd get home, trotted off to Bus Station and the feeling of everything being right with the world evaporated in an instant.
