Need to get a more economical car than my volvo 740 auto (may be for sale, £400 and it yours. auto estate new pads last month, brand new toyos all round and over £500 spent on it last year!)

Anyway the rover, It has a 1.6 engine and CVT, 56K full service hist and recent head gasket and cambelt service. on an N plate. 2 owners from new and full MOT.

what do you think?

Any info would be great, going to look at it tommorow.

Never owned a modern Rover (well modern ish, compared to my other cars!)

Many thanks

Right, that'll be a "bubble" (R3) as opposed to a "wedge" (R8), so a lot like my 25. Check for

Sticking/binding rear brakes whetther shoes or pads. This is often due to someone nipping up the handbrake too much. Pop out the rear ashtray and slacken the nut in there.

Stinky aircon - replacing the pollen filter usually does the job. It's in behind the glovebox. Just remove the glovebox lid and pop off the long cover with VALEO on it

Rear wheel bearings can get water in them, and wear out.

There's a body earth on the front slam panel. If it's crusty, all sorts of electrical gremlins occur. If the electrics are playing funny buggers generally, open the tailgate and look towards the top right near the hinge. There's a ruber tube which contains a lot of the arse end wiring. If that wiring has got chafed and is shorting, weird things happen. This is very common on these cars. The othere tube on the other side contains the tube for the rear washer. These often split.

Have a look at my website for a few other fixes. I'm in the process of updating it, so other stuff will appear.

You can ignore the Project Drive bit - the car in question is way too old.

Think these are Honda engines and they're not too bad. If it's had the headgasket done that's one less worry so if the price is right you should be o.k.

I didn't know that, cheers. It would explain why the last one I owned yonks back cracked the head though!

Even some of the late R8 216s had K-series power (coupes I think, possibly convertibles too).

I've driven a 'bubble' auto. They're very odd with the CVT transmission but this was a fairly abused example with over 100,000 miles on the clock and it drove fine. Sunroof seal can fail making them very noisy.

Should be cheap. They seem rather unfancied, which is a shame as they're pretty brisk and decent to hurtle around in.

Thanks for all the info.. Im hoping to pay around £500 so fingers crossed :-)

I love the prospect of getting some new shite!!!

If all looks good and i go ahead, it will be the most economical shite ive ever owned!

thanks again

You might struggle to get your money back at that price, but if it's not rotten and mechanically feels good, it's not a lot to pay out is it really?
