The modern day equivalent would be to ask "can anyone tell me what is the difference between the Focus RS & the Focus ST?"The answer would be the same, that the ST is hot & the RS is hot hot!

I think the RS has a 4 cylinder engine and the ST has a 5 cylinder. I could be wrong though.

No, that's spot-on. Also, the RS had a lot of trick bits such as a clever diff, and Ford lost money on every single one. The ST (which is a Mk2 Focus model) is much more mainstream. Ford are bringing out a Mk2 RS sometime soon, with 300bhp apparently. Gives the Barrys something to sign up on HP for :wink:Going back to shite times, the RS1600i was a homologation special for rallying and touring car racing. It had solid valve lifters, special injection and other jazz like that which made it much easier to tune for more power, even though in standard tune it only made 10bhp more than the 105bhp XR3i. A bit like the RS1800 of the mid-70s, which was much more pricey than the RS2000, but a much better base for the rally boys to start from.

See to me, a car with 4 cylinders sounds like it ought to be less fast than one with 5 cylinders, hence why the old VAG cars with 5 cylinders were top of the range & sounded very tasty. I guess it must be another of those engine anomalies between different manufacturers! :?

The only time (excepting that cut and shut accident I was in when I was 16) I have been scared sh*tless in a car was in my mates RS. They are seriously silly motors. I cant wait till an elderly rich relative pegs it and then I can buy one. [now all i need is an elderly rich relative]

Preferable over every previous RS Ford?I'd like an RS500, even if newer RS' are quicker, it's just the epitomy of an RS Ford. Mind you, the RS Excort goes for silly money for an old car, much more than any of the Sierras! Only a few grand less than what you could buy an RS Focus for!

Which RS Escort are you talking about Reg?Anything RS-badged as a Mk1 or Mk2 Scrote is going for stupid money, partly for nostalgia reasons, partly due to Irish demand, and partly due to rally boys wanting decent shells.Mk3 RS1600i's were still reasonable (i.e. £2-£3k for a minter) last time I looked. Mk3 RS Turbos - the one that only came in white - seem to be worth good money (£5k ish) if in good nick; a lot were barried with big turbos and clear lights in the 90s. Mk4 and Mk5 stuff seems to be languishing in the doldrums. And the Cosworth makes decent dough, mainly because they made/sold so few.I think a Mk3 RS Turbo crammed full of Waxoyl, absolutely standard, would float my boat the most. But a Maestro Turbo would be more fun  The only car that's ever scared me sh*tless was a mildly-tuned Pulsar GTI-R owned by a mate of mine, mainly because it was stupidly rapid, but also because he isn't a very good driver :P

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I was thinking of the MkV (?) RS Cosworth of the early 90s which seem to go for £15k or more which is at least £5k more than any of the Sierras get advertised for!

Aye, the one & only Escort RS Cosworth, AFAIK

Crazy money but any remotely shitty Escort Cosworths seem to get hoovered up by the rally boys + plenty market for bits stripped off them from the Max Power crowd. Add in the fact that the shell is unique, against how easy it is to procure a Sapphire 1.6L and wang all the Cosworth bits onto it - result being stupidly high prices for a car that in standard trim isn't even all that impressively quick compared with current day 4WD Jap performance saloon stuff.I'd still have one though :)
