Wanted a geared Vespa 125

Ok, after our rather unfortunate attempted theft of the Pug Viviacity, it's now all back together and awaiting a set of mirrors and me taking it for an MoT, but in the meantime, it seems I fancy taking my bike test so I can get a bigger scooter - so, am after a PK or PX 125 Vespa - cheap, but tidy, and MoT'd, of course. Does anyone know of one up to about £700. Distance no object within the UK.

I will of course entertain other makes as long as the price is OK and the thing has a clutch and gears and is a 125cc.

Oh, a bonus would be a pink one as I could get it past Her Majesty without complaint.

Thanks in advance

They're getting hard to find in that price range alas Campbell. Seemingly they break for good money these days and all the cheap ones are snapped up quickly. I'll ask about in my local scooter club and have a flick through the web.

Meanwhile try:

If she suddenly decides a 200 (197cc) is a much better idea and can stretch the budget a smidge my TX200 is up for grabs!

I found the Vespas for sale site - I reckon if I see one, I have to move fast and buy it - the 200 is too big - I'm going to sit out the two years on a 125 before going for a bigger scooter. I could find an ET4 or ET2 for that kind of money but don't fancy the automatic licence only, although SWMBO would obviously prefer an electric start auto, I don't want to.

Don't mind an LML, either. Unfortunately, a Lambretta Ld125 is out of the price range - but that would always be my first choice. Have also come to the conclusion that the further away from London, the cheaper they seem to be.

Lambrettas are just crazy (money) these days and I'd love one too.

LMLs don't have much of a reputation, build quality is suzpect to say the least and the wiring is a real comedy affair. Having said that they don't seem too difficult to get right and most are pretty low mileage affairs.

Vespa have re-made the PX125 now and I think they're strokers as well, I believe they're about £3,500 which is of course outside of your budget though.

If you wait another month or so prices tend to tradionally drop a bit as the ride out season/nice weather ends so some people offload there's a bit cheaper.

Oh, if you plan on getting a 125 and eventually doing your test on it some test centres won't allow a PX to be used as they're underpowered. It happened to a lad I know who ended up hiring a bike.

The alternative is to 'accidentally' put T5 badges on the scooter as these (scooters, not badges!) are faster/more powerful.

The ET range seem ok but they're not a 'proper' Vespa (to most people) and there are far better automatic scooters out there.

Tell me about it - I've had quite a few scooters which were driven on private land hence the lack of licence.

Have owned TWN Contessa, Heinkel A0 and A1, Ld, Li, Triumph Tina, and so on - so it's kinda in the blood.

Lambrettas seem to be £3500 or more for a tidy Ld.

I didn't think and LML could be that complicated - and I can rewire a scooter. The stroker PX is about £3500 new and I don't want finance at this time - I may be able to stretch to a little more but £700 is my 'toy' price bracket.

Thanks for the heads up on the underpowered aspect. I'll check with Motag about that.

I quite like ET styling in a retro kind of way but would rather have an older, proper scooter as it would be a toy. WHat I'd like most of all is a Bastert!

You'd get an Indian GP for about £1500 and maybe a Mk2 or 3 Li but the latter are hopelessly underpowered even by scooter standards.

DO NOT EVEN BOTHER WITH A LAMBRETTA!!

Reason? cheapest one's are Indian and are all totally shagged! Machanically, electrically and structurally.

They're all at least £500 for a pile of utter scrap and the new bits you can get, even from dealers, are over priced utter rubbish! The real deal quality Italian stuff is astronomical money.

Seriously, avoid.......been seen done. ....please listen to someone who's built many bikes and cars and did it for a living.

Oh and the ebay refurbed ones are done in India, in Lucknow I think or Vietnam and are utter toilet. Look at some old copies of Scootering to see the utter rubbish being sold. The retailers here sell 'new' engines but give no warranty and the whole bikes they recommend replacing all the seals and bearings!

ah, has to be a scooter - or else swmbo won't let me buy it - as she will ride it too - and she does wear skirts! I don't really want one that needs rewired, just that I could cope if I had to.

That's the (fairly unloved) Cosa version there. Haven't ridden one though can't understand why they're so unpopular but the good point is they're usually very cheap (as the listing you mentioned) shows.

I was thinking it needed two-toned with white engine and spare wheel covers and front wing - it'd look much nicer - also, the burgundy is yuk!

SWMBO has studiously ignored the e-mail - guess she's too busy thinking about weddings in Edinburgh!
