*Not mine.

Visited my new favourite scrappy today and loitering in the yard is a Merc 500SEC. I think it's a 1984, and it's in Jewish racing gold. Yard owner tells me it's tested, running very well and will drive away. He said the only thing that really lets it down is the interior. I've not been too close up to the car but can do and get pictures if anyone wants.

Price? He says he wants £600 for it which seems bloody good vfm to me but I haven't a clue what they're worth. Pm me if you want contact details, it's in the South Wirral area.

They can suffer typical Mercedes wheel arch rust and sill rot,but are pretty much like the w126 saloon to which they are family to ie - built like a brick out house with classic Mercedes styling, but sadly a big thirst for fuel, which is what chokes people off these wonderfull cars. That car would break for more than £600 so if its solid, its probably about its true value. Mint examples are probably 3-6000

I think these are only going to get cheaper - except the very best. Have a quick look at 1980s Rolls-Royce/Bentley values. They're dropping like the proverbial brick.

These Mercs are wonderfully refined though. Which naturally means I'm quite tempted. Especially as I'm eyeing up an 800 mile weekend soon. Oh, hold on. Let's do some fuel calculations.

Ok, perhaps not...

My S500L can do about 30 mpg cruising gently at 50-60 mph,but give her some welly, and its 5 mpg !
