I mustard mit, these do look fine motors, esp the minty fresh one I saw in Needham Market a couple of months ago

I wouldn't call it strong.  It's borderline undriveable and will only pass an MOT on a good day.

At some point approximately a year ago SWMBO told me that she wanted the 604 off of the drive.

I think she meant get rid of it.

Anyway I did what she said (as in, get it off the drive).  It took me most of the year.

I ordered £700 of steel and met the truck driver at a nearby industrial unit where they had a fork lift

Borrowed some akros and a genie lift, hacked some of the garage wall out and put the steel in

The steel went front and back.

I think that this was April or May.  I hired a Romanian to dig a trench on each side of the garage

Dropped four posts into the trench

Each post was welded over the end, and I drilled and tapped an M12 thread in it.  Then inserted a long threaded rod and jacked it up to the beam.

also put some fence posts into the trench and filled with concrete

this was the view from inside the garage towards the neighbours garden

Now that the beams (and therefore the roof) were being held up by the four corner posts I could knock out the old walls

Please say you used the handbrake to get the car in.

Slightly unrealistic

Nice to see the 604 is going to get some love.

As you can see the 806 is still giving great service and even though I have tried to replace it a few times over the last year, but it is it's replacement that ends up leaving as it is such a useful old bus.

That is an 806.

It is not the 806.

By the way you know that V246KGD had a customer intercooler, oversize injectors and solid flywheel don't you?

I put my personal plate on it and the mods might go a long way to explain why it is still with me. It flies along and will still give over 40 to the gallon which for my driving is well impressive. I have tried a few other 2.0hdi's but none as good as this one. It has started to play up a little lately by going a bit gutless, but switching it off and restarting seems to put it right for now. It had a few new panels the other year to tidy it up a bit but not much else since. It could really do with a new exhaust and I suspect it is due a cam belt as well which it might get next year.

If I was a betting man I would guess that it needs a new boost control solenoid. They are a common failure on HDIs.

Nice to see the 604 is still alive and well. I went with its previous owner when he bought it in 2008 from somewhere near Heathrow.

Wow that is interesting.

Presumably he had to get it towed?

I got it in 2011 and don't think he had done anything so I am guessing it is much as it was in 2008.

Do you know where the previous owner had stored it? It's amazingly unrusty for its age.

When he got it it was in an open-sided shed, but far enough in not to get rained on. It was in a dry shed for about a year after he got it, I don't know where it went after that,he had enough cars to require more than one barn. Can you remember where you picked it up from? You're right that he probably never did anything with it during his ownership, another consequence of too many cars. I'd completely forgotten about the smell until reading it earlier in your thread, it was like that as long as I knew the car. Unfortunately the story didn't end up quite so happily for the manual example you traded with him.

The manual one was on ebay fairly recently but now painted mat black.  At least it still lives.

I have gone back through this topic and reinstated quite a lot of the pictures which had fallen off of the edge of the Internet.
