Luxobarges_Are_Us Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 This has already surpassed a grand, and there's 9 days left in the auction!! I can see their appeal, but it hadn't occured to me that they've got a serious following in the UK.
dollywobbler Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 I didn't think they did. The tide must have turned. In theory, they're absolutely great. Downsides are hideous thirst (given the engine sizes) and rather dramatic corrosion. I still want one very much. Hope I haven't left it too late!
dollywobbler Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 How thirsty are they? Low 20s in town... Aye. Not exactly impressive for something that was never larger than 1299cc. Is it something about flat-four engines? Beetles are not exactly thrifty, and nor are Subarus (albeit they have 4WD, but they're still pretty thirsty).
Guest Leonard Hatred Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Ah, that isn't great at all. I think you're right, flat 4 engines seem to be inherently inefficient. Even Subaru's boxer diesel isn't very economical by straight 4 diesel standards.
theorganist Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 I still want one very much. Hope I haven't left it too late! There seems to be a few on Leboncoin, maybe cheaper over there? http://www.leboncoin.fr/voitures/202122991.htm?ca=17_s 600 Euros and has had "new kneecaps" 4 new tires, plates before + new brake pads to hand, unite bearings new fronts, 2 bellows of new Cardan joints, new kneecaps, 4 new spheres, distribution carried out with 115000km, hydraulic fluid nine, draining + filters carried out to 115000 km. Technical control ok (less than six months). Visible on riscle.
Rod/b Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 That one on LBC looks bloody well bargainous. Good looking too. Phwoar.
dieselnutjob Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 do you often have a blowout whilst driving between two lorries?
garethj Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Beetle engines aren’t great for fuel economy because the compression ratio is so low. High compression makes more power and more economy, but low compression means it can run on 2 star petrol or lower
