Its Biting Me in the Arse already...

Yeah, yeah, big Citroen has electrical issues - no surprise there.

Bought the C8 for towing duties, it already had a towbar and twin electrics fitted so that saves a few quid so I thought, only the 12 N socket is FUBARed, its mullered some control unit. Took it back to the dealer to fixorate and they wont touch it and have directed me to a towbar dealer as the existing one is a mess of scotchlocks.

Now Im looking at the fat end of £300 for unpicking the current mess and fitting a 13 pin socket to the on board socket.

Bit of a bummer, but should the dealer chip in some of this as

a) it was furbar when sold

B) they knew I was buying it to tow with.

Or should I just bend over and open the vasaline?

Did you specifically ask for the towing electrics to be checked as part of the deal?

We have used cars with towbars fitted, and we (in the workshop) take no responsibility for the function of the towbar electrics during a Pdi. Unless asked, but normally it's outsourcedc to a specialist to be chacked. On MOT we only check the security of the ironwork.

Sadly not - I said to the dealer "oh good its got a towbar and twin electrics" and then discussed how the current Zafira wasnt quite up to the job of towing the Bailey I have (at 1400 kgs its a heavy beastie). Hey Ho, we live and learn.

Nah, nothing so simple.

The 12N works except the left indicator which is on all the time. The dealer says its a control pack that has gone open circuit and because its after market wont touch it. Cant says I blame em really. Im going to take it to an auto spark and see what the price of unpicking the socket is and ask him if he can either wire up another 12 N or go for the 13 pin option, just omit the 12S side of the 13 pin (ie bypass relay and hard wire to battery - its there already, but I never use it so would rather it was disconnected, less chance of that going FUBAR in the future).

On the plus side the NS mirror has started playing ball only once out of every 3 unlock cycles and that is covered by the warranty, so it'll be going back to have that fixorated.

I would have thought that something as new as the C8 was CAN-bus electrics i.e you can't just dick about fitting some old wiring like on older type cars as the modules 'talk' to each other. If it is CANbus and thats the problem then I guess you could remove the current wiring and repair and original circuits then buy the proper Citroen wiring harness.

If it is the case that the proper CANbus wiring harness has not been fitted then could you not kick off at the dealer suggesting that its not fit for purpose etc?

Or you could just fuck it.

Most likely I think. I'll get the current mess unpicked from the loom and the proper 13 pin assy bought.

Vaseline on standby.

Just been out to it and the NS mirror has packed up totally now.

Poor man's Citroen CX Safari DTR turbo.

I'd rather have an ex-Scotchlok demo vehicle than have electrical problems on a CANBus car. Terrifying in its complexity.

the early C8 was vanbus, the later ones canbus

I need to put towing electric onto my 607 at some point and I will just be using one of those 7 way electronic relays which places no load on the car lighting circuits at all. It has a bulb warning system and I don't want to risk messing that up.

I don't think that they are that hard to install.
