Advice for posting a car part

Hi shite heads, I need a replcement Torque Converter for the CX and have located one in Bradford. I will be going down that way within the next month anyway but want to get the fairly major surgery of engine out, split 'box off, replace TC and crank seals all before this year's southward journeys. So instead of picking up the complete gearbox on offer, I want the TC sent up here to Glasgow.

So I wanna canvas the opinions/ experiences of shitists who've had bits sent via couriers or even Royal Mail.

The Torque Convertor in question is not very large being about 10" diameter and about 5" deep. Obviously not 'light' but hardly excessive.

Any recommendations on courier companies?

Paisley Freight specialise in transporting car parts and have a price list on their website.

I sent a set of headlights down to Lincolnshire on the Friday and they arrived on Saturday. I'd highly recommend them.

I've bought and sold car parts posted by the Royal Mail/Parcelforce (for bigger/heavier items) recently and they've been great, often next day service.

I'm prejudiced against private couriers though, as there's often an extra charge for my postcode even though it's only a few miles from the A9.

Remember it's going to be full of oil..... a leaking parcel will cost YOU, not the sender.

Thanks folks, I'll look into it now. I'm in Glasgow City so don't think there'll be any postcode issues (I don't think...)

Hmm the guy with the part is a proper car guy and would drain it fully - do you mean residual oil leaks being a problem? In what way does a leaking parcel cost? is it due to risk? or coz it might be a bomb or something?

as long as its empty of fluid (i suggest vacuuming the fluid out, so your sure its dry)

wrap it at least twice in bubblewrap, seal it with parcel tape - at least two layers, one left to right, the next top to bottom, if you see what i mean

then interparcel it - always overestimate the size & weight, it doesnt usually make much difference to the price, but underestimating will cost you dearly

DHL will probably be the cheapest, or UK mail

edit: if your parcel leaks - you will have to pay the value of all the parcels your leaky parcel has damaged plus cleaning of all surfaces it has infected - and then most couriers will add you to their blacklist (both sender and receiver) and any courier estimates will be higher than a 17-year-old's insurance quote for new jag

Thanks Autofive - I'm hearing you.

Cheers, I'll look into it.
