GSA water leak

I thought I'd start a new thread so I'm not hijacking Boobydoo's thread..

Mark, does the GSA have a sunroof? My Cambridge had a leak ever since I'd owned it, and judging by the mass of plates in the drivers footwell it had been leaking for years. Turned out to be a rubber pipe onto the sunroof drain tube had perished and had been letting water in. Just an idea, or could it be coming in around one of the bonnet hinges? (sorry I don't know the setup of GSA's).

The best way to find the leak is to sit in the car while someone sprays it with a garden hose, usually the cause is fairly obvious.

Hi Dicky,

Mine is an estate and they don't have sunroof's - thank god! Although I do know of a beige estate with a retro-fit full length Webasto sunroof and brown vinyl roof 8) . I know from experience (BX, Renault Clio Mk1) that French car + sunroof = royal pain in the arse.

I've had the spray test done - unfortunately it was inconclusive without further investigation. Bonnet hinge is possible - I think it might be a hole in the windscreen surround where it meets the bulkhead (hidden under the front wing panel). If I'm feeling brave in the "summer" I'll take the nearside wing off and have a butchers.

BTW I saw your Austin at Brooklands and have a video of the convoy that it probably features on :)

Cheers.

Try ye olde talc trick. Dust a load around vague area, then turn the hose on the bastard. Should be able to see water tracks pretty clearly

Thanks, that would be really interesting! I did look out for the BX but didn't see it in the end.

Another thing you could try would be to wait until it's dark then get someone to shine a torch over the bulkhead/scuttle area while you sit inside and see if you can spot any light.

I suspect that the rubber hose that goes from the sunroof drain tubes has also perished on my 604

any ideas where I could buy some of that rubber pipe?

The vid is a big old file because it's in HD and I took over 9 mins worth... but I'll check it out tonight. I came to Brooklands in a friend's white BX instead as it seemed silly to convoy down in two cars.

Good idea about the torch 8)

I just used a piece of 1" radiator hose on mine, cut to about four inches long, and a couple of jubillee clips. Is there any way you can peel back the headlining to have a look? On mine I had to take the sunvisor and door trim off, then I could roll the headlining back out of the way and the problem was obvious.

Have you cleared the drains in the wheel arches. Mine was bunged up with all sorts of crap, a little squeeze on the rubber drain tubes released it all. Not pleasant but a big improvement on wet feet.

Do you own a 604 ?

Yes I can peel the headling back at that spot. The other clue is the rotten A pillars

No, an Austin Cambridge. But I'd guess the problem is similar.
