Shite garage door question

My parents have a 1960s Westland garage door - can't find a photo, but of this type:

It's a heavy bugger, and lifting it is assisted by a pair of springs in a box above the door, connected to the door by a cable on each side. Impressively, the basic design appears to have continued in production until about a decade ago, and spare parts are readily available.

Now one of those cables has snapped. The fitting instructions are straightforward enough, but even though we both had hearty breakfasts, two of us had nowhere near enough strength to pull the cable downwards against the spring's tension and connect it to the hook on the door.

Any suggestions?

Yeah, ring a garage door maintenance / repair bod. They should be able to sort that in no time, and for pence. We replaced the spring and cables on my parents garage door about 5 years ago, and it wasn't very expensive at all.
