i got a box of handtools off an old boy, and in the bottom of the box was a wooden box;

all the parts are numbered from 30 to 3, aprat from the solid shaft with a spike

the smaller parts have a hole in the centre

i have no idea what they are

lathe tools perhaps?

does anyone know what they are?

Did he work in an engineering factory? They look as if they could be the standard pieces used for calibrating the guages that used to be used by shop floor inspectors to check production or to set up jigs and fixtures. The fitted box and unmarked condition make it unlikely that they were used day to day on the shop floor.

I think I saw some implements like this being used in a "specialist interest" film on the internet...

They look rather like the extended version of Johansson's Passbitar, known in the US as Joblocks.

Probably one of the most significant tools in the engineering world.

Are there no etched on indications of what they may be? If they are Johansson's gauge pieces then they could well be quite valuable.

no markings at all other than the numbers and the box is plain too

Possibly so, although they look more like what are known here as slip gauges and are mainly used for calibrating measuring instruments such as micrometers.

If my theory is correct you may have something there, as they are made in 'Ring' and 'Plug' versions and can be of either the 'Go' or 'Nogo' type :shock: *

* Disclaimer - this is purely a wild guess as I have never seen a "specialist interest" film on the internet other than those purely involving Talbot Tagoras
