Tanzanian truck shite

I passed briefly through Dar-es-Salaam a couple of weeks back and obviously my mind turned to vehicular tat. Most of the cars were white Toyota Chaser saloons of around 1996 onwards vintage so not of great interest (to me at least) - but there were some fine Autoshite-stylee trucks you used to see on every ring road in Britain but now all but vanished from these shores.

Photo-taking opportunities were pretty limited as I was trying to be inconspicuous and either doing 40mph down Julius Nyerere Road or stopped at a junction and swamped with people selling me bananas, Kiswahili newspapers and Chinese transistor radios, but I did capture a few. Enjoy.

First up, it wouldn't be Africa without a Peugeot 504:

Early 80s Iveco:

This DAF seems to have the grille mounted a bit low - might have been bodged up, or I suppose they may have been different (later?) for the African market:

Quite a few Leyland Terriers still going strong. This one comes with a bonus Merc L-Series:

Um, that appears to be all. There were also a couple of Dodge Kew Fargos I haven't seen since the 1971 Corgi catalogue, some 80s Hiace minibuses and a brush-painted Mk1 Toyota Starlet that looked like it had smallpox, but pics eluded me. Sorry. Will try harder next time.

Could be my eyesight but the DAF grille looks like it's dropped slightly. Scania next to it looks pretty tidy, think these were reknowned for being tough as old boots.

Cheers for sharing.

Indeed - there were lots of mostly tidy 82/92/112 Scanias around, and even a couple of 111s still going strong.
