Thing wanted.

As in a VW Thing. Chap I know wants one, and he's asked me to find one for him. As I'm stuck in work at the mo without decent interweb access I thought I'd ask if any of you lot know where any of 'em are hiding.

It's the thing that's a bit like a Kubelwagon.

My mate had one of these at the end of the 90's, he said it was the best car he ever owned due to the lack of anything that was considered a luxury. It had nets on the dashboard for stowage.

Is that a Beetle floorpan?

Volkswagen new car design meeting circa 1960's:

Executive #1: "We want to build a new car"

Executive #2: "Right, we'll use the Beetle as a base (again)."

End of meeting.

I would love a 181 - had a mate who had one a few years back toughest and most reliable car I have ever seen - basically an updated Kubelwagen with better weather gear!

Chap who wants it has an eclectic mix of superb and shite, so a 'Thing' would fit in to his collection perfectly.

I had a go in a Trekker (the model is the Type 181, America got a version designed for holiday rentals and promitional vehicles etc called a Thing. Trekker is what they're known as in the UK but is a nickname where Thing was the official marketing name over in the states).

It was a lot of fun, given that they weigh bugger all and have nothing in them. Windscreen folds down, and you can take the doors off to just leave the jeep-style cutouts. They have duckboards so you can get an inch or so of water in the bottom before you have to stop and bail out, your shoes should remain out of the water.

The one I was in had the gun holders still in place so whilst my mate drove, I was pretend-shooting people with a Krooklock.

Ok, it might have been fun because it had a highly strung 2276cc motor out back with twin 48 Webers, and would do wheelies on the right surface.

That's the military 181, the non military versions had rubber floormats, like all the 182 (RHD) versions did
