Shite in Southend!

That is good to know it's been retaxed, as it was raped for its engine for a Sunbeam Alpine by someone who trades on Ebay as "Mr Seafront" and last I heard it had been weighed in at Benfleet Scrap!

There's a really scabby Alpine parked in a back street not too far from Ambleside Drive. Could it be the recipient of the Vogue's engine?

Possibly, he put it on Ebay (complete with the Singer's engine, not fitted) but I don't think it sold due to one of his usual optomistic reserves. It's a white one I think.

The one I saw is an utter mess and at least three different colours. I'll see if I can get a photo of it at some point.

Angry Dicky, Does that mean that you think the Vogue has been scraped?

I wasn't in the position to do up the car when it was in my Grandmother's ownership, but if the guy still had it with an engine and was selling it, id seriously consider buying it back off him.

- Shep, thank you for having a look out for me. I'm up in Leeds so not very local. I just stumbled on this site a few weeks ago and couldn't believe that I saw his car!

I was speaking to a local garage owner about old cars a few weeks ago and I told him about the Vogue and he said he'd seen one matching the description at Benfleet scrap. Mind you this was a couple of months ago, and the tax (the owner obviously isn't bright enough to realise it should be tax exempt) would have been cashed in if it was scrapped, so it might still be around. I'll keep an eye out for it on my travels :)

P.S. I noticed the Leeds numberplate on it, it's come a long way then!

Oh and Shep, "Mr Seafront" also owns the BMC truck, Ford Consul and his main car is a rusty white Triumph Herald 13/60, CRK ***J I think.

Posted

You mean they don't give you tax-free status automatically? I didn't realise you had to apply, probably because I only ever had one qualifying car and that had already been reclassified long before I got it.

I do hope this Vogue still exists; would be even better if it can be reunited with Sarah! Good luck!

I had a quick nose around Ambleside Drive this morning on the way home from work, and although the FG and Consul are still extant, the Vogue isn't. Perhaps it has indeed been scrapped?

Incidentally, I took a photo of the Alpine parked a few streets away. It also looks like it is bereft of engine:

I wonder if it's connected with 'Mr Seafront' at all?

Incidentally, I've seen a late model white Vitesse locally from time to time over the past few years. Could it be the Herald you've seen, Dicky?

Posted

Yup that's got to be the one. It had a pinto or something like that fitted I think.

Herald/Vitesse, I always get them mixed up, it's often parked on the seafront near the Sealife Centre. I think it's got a red stripe, and the registration definitely starts CRK. Talking of Heralds, have you seen that really rough Herald convertible that's hanging off the back of a spec lift in Lifstan Way, near the junction with Southchurch Road?

That's the one! It's definitely a late Vitesse. I see it on the seafront quite often, along with a black Cortina MK 2 :)

I've not seen that Herald convertible, but there's a really nasty two-tone green 1250 saloon on a driveway further up my street.

Posted

Yep I know the Herald you mean, that's been there years.

The MK2 Cortina (handpainted black) is the daily driver for some old giffer who lives, IIRC, over behind the hospital somewhere. He also has a C reg MK1 stuck down the side of his house.

There's a shite house I found the other day in Sandringham Road, up near the junction with Ambleside, daily driver pre-war Wolseley 18/85, and a derelict Jag XJ6 and old Merc. Oh and I saw that beige Allegro estate again last night, parked in Alexandra St, it only seems to appear at night and I never have my camera when it's around. It may still be there. The load bay was full of rubbish and it had the obligatory blue badge on the dashboard. When I saw it I exclaimed "1.3L! That bloke is such a winner!" and my mate said "No, he's really not"

The PUB Vogue has reappeared in Ambleside Drive, still apparently engineless. :)

I contacted mr seafront and this is what he had to say:-

Hello i purchased the Singer Vogue for the engine and gearbbox to fit a 1967 Sunbeam Alpine,i have removed these items but its a shame as the underneath of the car is totally rotten chassis, floor, sills i may transfer the number plate to my Cadillac I have got some folk interested in banger racing the car but wont do this until i have used all the good interior and other parts shame it was stored in a damp garage for 22 years Thanks for mailing me Ray

car is still complete less engine and gearbox

- mrseafront

At least it will have helped other people to enjoy their cars for a little longer. I can't see it lasting long as a banger car though!

RIP PUB Vogue!

Posted

Yep, predictable response. I have to say it did look extremely rotten, with the rear valence non-existant, the sills literally hanging off and the rear spring hangers looking rather crunchy.

Now I wonder how he managed to get an MOT on it?

Sarfend is without doubt a contender for the Shite Capital of the UK...every time I have been there I have been AWED at the quality and quantity of the shite kit...

It was there that I found the shitist car I EVA OWND - the 1988 Lebaron......Torsten swtill hasn't forgiven me for selling it on to him!

I'm in full agreement. The amount and diversity of automotive tat in the town and its suburbs never ceases to amaze me - I must have seen at least twenty cars which would be of interest to Autoshiters in the course of a half an hour when I was out and about this morning :)

I spotted this baby A40 in Leigh this morning, about 5 minutes from that Renault 10 I spotted in December (which hasn't moved an inch since then btw, although a fresh tax disc has been slipped under the clothes peg :)

Spotted in Waitrose's car park today, a slightly scruffy but sound 1965 Triumph Herald 1200, which looks like it has been the same person's daily driver for about 40 years:

Nothing else of interest in the car park today, though. It is normally full of old tat as Waitrose is the local old giffers' supermarket of choice ;)

Saw this actual car driving down my street just as I was leaving for work yesterday evening. It looks a lot shinier now:

I can't recall when I last saw a Princess, let alone such an early model. Do want! :D

Personally, I wouldn't have paid more than £500 for it, as it was pretty horrific in the metal; when I first saw it in 2008, I thought that it was waiting to be collected by the scrap man

He's got an equally rough Transit beavertail now. Everything he owns/sells is absolutely rotten and wobbed up to the max.

I came across his Cresta a few weeks back, the one with the laughable welding underneath.
