garethj Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 Rarely has something been less appropriately named On the main road of the next village, they've put a traffic island on the left so traffic coming from the NSL to the 30 limit has to stop for traffic coming through the village. Unless of course you don't feel like, when you can just blast on through, making the poor sod (me if you hadn't guessed) coming the other way hit the brakes and veer left, then right to avoid the kerb, even though it's my right of way. There's signs and everything, with pictures in case the twats can't read. Further on, there's a double chicane, and it's traffic coming the same way as earlier that has to stop again. I have a little more sympathy this time, because this double traffic island is on a bend, so you can't actually see very far to check if it's clear. If you're the sort of person who checks of course; most people seem to think "why bother?" and hammer on through, with a bit of extra speed just in case, like. Traffic planners - 0Mongs on the road - 1 How much of my tax money did they spend on this crap?
eddyramrod Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 Rarely has something been less appropriately named +1 there, it hardly ever works. How much of my tax money did they spend on this crap? Too bloody much! There will have been some nice little earners on the way, junkets etc. Why couldn't I have few enough morals to go into politics?
myglaren Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 I find that those silly "Traffic Calming" projections into the carriageway with their nice black, steel bollards that are invisible on dark rainy nights just lurking there for the unwary driver on an unfamiliar road to plough right into them to be borderline criminal. They are the stupidest thing I have seen to date.Make the damned things easily visible for god's sake
Quintus Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 There seems to be a lot of 'tinkering' projects like this about at the moment. I'm guessing there's a few local authorities with budget money left over?
Negative Creep Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 These so called "speed bumps" are a joke. If anything they slow you down Copyright Viz Top Tips
ashmicro Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 One of those chicane-things here had to be moved not long ago. Despite numerous complaints to the Roads Service NI, it was deemed safe. Drivers approaching the side where you had to give priority to oncoming vehicles were committed to their manouevre before they could see if anyone was coming the other way. The inevitable happened, and there was a head on collision between a Dale Farm truck and an Ulsterbus. No real injuries, but a mahoosive mess. I can't find it on any of the NI newspaper websites, but there was a guy in Belfast who dug up a speedbump outside his house. He worked odd hours, and while he was trying to get some shuteye, trucks etc would hit this thing and rattle like the bejaysus, waking him up.

meggersdog Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 The ones in our village are similarly shite. There are eight in all, four northbound and four southbound. There is a staggered crossroads and a zebra crossing with a give way to oncoming traffic triangular calming thing either side less than thirty yards away.Drivers turning left from the junction onto the main road never seem to look left before exiting. They always either look shocked or give out hand gestures when some poor sod is negotiating the traffic calming and therefore is on the wrong side of the road right infront of them. The next village had similar triangular efforts running through that village. The last one was a hundred yards from the very busy east coast and London to anywhere north main railway lines.Quite often the window between the barriers coming up and going down again was less than five minutes.Drivers had to wait for the line of traffic the other side to stream past before going around the traffic calming by which time the barriers were down again.I think the bus companies complained as sometimes it could take twenty minutes or more just to get out of the village. That last triangular thingy has been removed now.
